OK, so the search function isn't finding a thread for Cloud Atlas, although I'm sure there must be one.

The new film from The Wachowski's and Tom Twyker that releases in a few months has a 5 minute extended trailer doing the rounds online and I have to say, it looks very very impressive. Visually great, a great cast and a really huge scope. Will be really interested to see this now, it's certainly been off my radar all year. Given the scope of the film I cant imagine it will be anything other than a really lengthy flick, but looks like it could be well worth it. Only downside - was that Jim Sturgess in asian makeup??!! What. The. Fuck.

Saw the trailer today, did some research on it, and it looks pretty damn promising!

I'm really looking forward to this one, as it seems really epic in scope, and it has a quality cast of proven actors and actresses.

Count me in :)

Just seen the trailer on Daily-motion and, generally, the film looks promising if not alittle long winded.
Reading the Films synopsis and history tells me that producing this book into a film does create the feeling of doubt in my mind.
Can it really be pulled off well? hmm....

Apparently all the actors will be switching races in certain stories. Hugh Grant said he plays a Korean man in one of the stories, and Halle Berry supposedly plays a white woman in one.

Trailer looks stunning, has potential to be something really special this. Of course by the same token it also has the potential to be the biggest mess known to man.

Director's Commentary/Intro to the trailer here (Click Me!) in case anyone is interested, first time I've seen the whole Larry/Lana Wachowski thing in the flesh so to speak, quite nice to see the erm......brothers in front of the camera for a change, haven't seen that since the documentaries on The Matrix DVD some 12/13 years ago.

A Joke!? Youtubers never fail to amuse. It’s not that hard to grasp, he underwent gender reassignment and is now a woman... has been for some time.

This could go either way... but I respect them for taking it on. And even if it’s a failure, it will likely be a spectacular one worth having a look at. But hopefully they'll nail it.

Really? As much as the trailer looks ace and I'm really now looking forward to the film, the make-up will have to be stunning to make me overlook something as ambitious as that, and looking at Asian Jim Sturgess, I find it hard to beleive it will be anything other than distracting. Be interesting to see how it's handled.

I fully expect this movie to be a critical bomb and box office flop.

And for me to love every minute of it.

If Empire forums had 'like' buttons, I'd have pressed it here!

I've never read the book but am intrigued by the concept - may have to check it out!

Just watched the trailer. It looks a great big mess.

I'm a huge fan of the novel, and when I first it was to be adapted into a film, my heart sank. I can't imagine how it would translate into film form. When I heard the Wachowskis were involved, my heart sank even more. The only ray of hope is Tom Tykwer.

The novel is so brilliant, and yet so definitely bookish. The structure, the style, the manner, I can't imagine how it will be filmed.

I hope I am proven wrong. I hope it is a phenomenal film. I would love to love this film.

I just don't see it happening. And I fear it will put people off seeking out the novel, because that is truly great.

Will adviod the book for the time being and see the film first as to read the novel first might leave too much of a impression and impact on how I see the film.

It sounds like an interesting experment, however having the Wachowski's involved as since Bound and the first Matrix they have gone of the boil.

Black Tom Hanks. I ..uh..what...hmmmmm

Don't like Halle Berry as an actress but otherwise I really like the look of this: even though it is obviously going to be a mess. Far too much to fit into one film.

And watching the film might ruin the impression and impact you have on the book. The book is already brilliant: enjoy the book first.

Yeah, you owe it to yourself to read the book- it is, quite simply, a modern masterpiece.

Cloud Atlas would be the 2nd Mitchell book in my all-time top 5 works of fiction (before you ask, Ghostwritten would be ahead of it, nestling in number 2 spot just behind Catch-22).  I shared the scepticism of others when I heard about the film adaptation that was being prepared by the Wachowskis.  However, Tykwer has form when adapting those "difficult to film" novels - Perfume was amazing - and is no stranger to complex themes in his work.

The trailer itself is an intriguing look at how they're planning to tackle the individual tales that connect across the centuries.  The cast looks pretty damn solid (OK, so Halle Berry wouldn't have been my first choice but you never know...) and the Sonmi~451 sequence looks intriguing.  Colour me excited.

I assume you've read Black Swan Green. Brilliant slice of literature.

Also, nice post-time there, Sharky...!

Coolio - completely accidental timing, I assure you!

Yeah, Black Swan Green is another fantastic piece of prose from Mr Mitchell, though it is probably my least favourite of his novels.  That still puts it head and shoulders above most contemporary writers, but it just didn't grab me the way his first 3 books did.

On the flipside, the book which most certainly have more stuff than the movie, so if you watch the movie first then read the book you'll get more stuff instead of less.

The Wachowskis have made a habit of going balls out (excuse the pun) in pursuit of their strange, gargantuan visions—and the emergence of Cloud Atlas on the horizon indicates they won't be changing their ways anytime soon.

They have, of course, proven their deftness for complex adaptations with V for Vendetta, whose script—ironically—reads better than McTeigue's film plays.

The only Tykwer film I've seen is The International, which was a solidly entertaining thriller. Beyond that, I have nothing much to comment with the exception of paying due heed to his preceding reputation, as well as that of David Mitchell's source material that has lain untouched on the shelf next to me for nearly a year.

At this point, I'll probably read it after I've seen the film, which looks to be one of the most ambitious films of the modern age; a fact that hopefully tempers any scepticism for the project with an even higher degree of admiration.

Looking forward to it.

EDIT:
Oh, and directorscut—I'd started a thread some months earlier HERE. Looks like it got buried seeing as the last post is timestamped December 2011.

The book is absolutely amazing however the film will simply never live up to it, it's just too complex and far reaching to be successfully shoe horned into a movie. Plus the Wachiowskis haven't done anything truly great since the Matrix movies, V for Vendetta was decent but not exactly regarded as a classic and Speed Racer was a 3 star kid's film. That said I'll still watch it!
