The use of "one" in English grammar has dropped over time such that it is now just considered posh. "One does like a bit of jam on one's toast."

But it serves a purpose.

In this text-heavy age - texting, Facebook, Twitter, etc - clarity is king. When saying "you don't know what happens" when talking to someone is very different to saying "one doesn't know what happens", even though that is probably how it was intended. We end up having to say things like "you (you in general that is)" or "you (generic you)" which is clumsy and unnecessary. There is already a word that serves that purpose, and it is "one".

One would like to reclaim one as an everyday tool to distinguish between meanings in the way it was intended to do.

I do not think one is posh just for using "one".

One, too, wants to.

I agree. I don't use it in speech but use it a lot when typing. It's a useful device.

The main problem with using it is that you sound like an insufferable tosser

I agree with everything homer said. I almost never use the second person unless to refer to an actual second person by "you" + verb.

To answer the OP, I do tend to drop "one" into my vocabulary from time to time. I've noticed also that I'm doing it a lot more now, as I'm getting older.

I just use you as I like to confuse people.

I feel so used...

Lazarus - yeah, I don't use it in speech but, in typing, almost always.

Rhub - I know, this is why I'm trying to reclaim it. It's not solely the domain of insufferable tossers: it's the domain of people wanting clarity. Who may also be insufferable tossers, but not because they use one...

What's the big deal about clarity? If someone says 'you' where 'one' would be grammatically correct/clearer it's still quite obvious what they mean so why bother? If the use of 'you' was resulting in misunderstandings and pratfalls nationwide I could see it as an issue but if that were the case I'd be more concerned that a large propertion of the country were too fucking thick to know what it means. While sounding like insufferable tossers.
Though to be honest I'm just disappointed this thread isn't about Metallica.

I'm just glad it wasn't about U2!

One has to say, with all the carnage to which the English language is being subjected, this is not exactly high on one's priorities!  For example, apparently now "to podium" is an appropriate verb according to some BBC radio sports commentators.  Expect to hear it frequently over the next few weeks, while asking yourself why these people seem to have such difficulty in differentiating between verbs and nouns - it's not like it's a big ask...

I think we should action this immediately.
