The police also said he seems to have mortar rounds in his apartment - possibly there was illegal activity going on to? Or am I just over-optimistic in assuming those can't possibly be legal.

You'd hope not.

I missed a point in my previous post. You wrote:

So I'm not so sure about the procuring illicitly part though. They'd have to be the kind of person who could access that, and a normal non-criminal - where would they start?

The sort of person who wants an illegal firearm is not a normal non-criminal. They will probably already know at least one person who could get them on the right track.

They will easily make contacts with people who are only too happy to aid them. I am sad to say I could probably have one this time tomorrow if I were so inclined and I am in no way a criminal. Criminals don't tend to be choosy who they sell to or what their product will be used for.

I'd looked at army/navy (I'm not really up on where else might be relevant ) but couldn't see anything using the words the police chap used, but that might well be my ignorance.

Re Dunblane. I didn't think I was mixing this up with anything else - wasn't it Dunblane where many of the links between Hamilton's interactions and relationship with the police was kept under wraps and wasn't subject to the Inquiry?

Armour piercing and incendiaries! Jesus....

I must echo this writers sentiments: http://popwatch.ew.com/2012/07/20/defy-the-theater-shooter/
Don't let this psycho who was stupid enough, or cunning enough, to do this horrific act at the premiere of one of the biggest movies of this year, one that features a vigilante, govern our thinking. The moment we start giving in to fear and sorrow.. he has won and will have gained the infamy he obviously has sought out.

I'm pretty sure there was mention that Hamilton was known to the Police prior to Dunblane, and had been removed from various positions he held involving small children because of reports about his behaviour. There is also reference to some of his Police records remaining sealed on Wikipedia, but they offer no citation for that.

Even if they were sealed that doesn't necessarily mean they were unavailable to Lord Cullen.

There is certainly reference to the fact Hamilton had a long standing grievance with the Police and other authorities. However the system as it operated then only looked at convictions: not other interactions with the Police. Had it done so it is possible that his licences would have been revoked. Again it was the laws and systems in place at the time which were primarily at fault in that sad case.

An absolutley shocking and sad story to be sure.I cannot fathom how cruel and unfair this world is that this kind of tragedy is allowed to happen.Regardless of the location and circumstances. These people were at the cinema looking forward to a great nights entertainment only to have this nightmare happen.

I havnt seen TDKR yet ( have my tickets booked for a late night showing tonight along with a few mates ) and my thoughts will certainly be with those people who have suffered this tragedy.I still am looking forward to the film a great deal but i dunno what my feelings will be at the time.

This will unfortunately no doubt open up the whole '' are movies responsible for real life violence? '' debate given that this psycho called himself The Joker and the media seem to have latched on to that label. To that my opinion is of the '' movies dont make people into killers, they make them more creative''.Its pretty obvious this guy was so sick that he was going to strike in some fashion no matter where the location was.

I just dont know what else to say right now because it is so sad...

I doubt the burden of fact will weigh heavily on the red tops.

The best thing they could do would be to throw him into a deep, dark hole with as little fanfare as possible so that he will not get any of the fame he so obviously craves.

That's a curious suggestion, given the film screening at which this happened...

Have you seen it yet?

Has anyone in America even considered the fact that the Constitution might be a tiny bit out of date? Now I know it's only 300odd years old, what a silly question I know.

It says in the constitution that a well regulated militia is essential for a free state. That may have been the case in 1776. How long have we lived in a world with armies? I know that the sheer size of America, they feel like they need citizen militias but again, who are these people defending themselves from? Are they so paranoid they think the Government and the massive Army that they control doesn't have their back if a threat enters their town that needs the services of a militia?

I know that gun control is a nasty little issue in America. I know there is numpties exist who still believe in the Confederacy and the Union and all that. This is getting serious. It has been serious for decades. An issue like this shouldn't come down to how many votes it's going to cost you. Obama is threatening his popularity and his votes for the Healthcare Bill (another huge gaping hole in Americas culture), which is commendable and I know he can't take these two huge issues on at the same time. But someone in America must act to change this.

I think that's missing the point sadly - many of these nutters think the government is the problem, particularly the back woods supremacists heading to Waco types.

Well i see the red tops have done it and are trying to link the shooting to a scene in Frank Millers Dark Knight Return?

It seems to mainly be tenuously linked in that a nutter is shown to shoot some people in a cinema in one frame from the comic and he had red hair and at one point in the past Holmes has his hair dyed red.

Horrifying story. Given the number of people who moaned about the violence levels in The Drak Knight, I too hope that people don't start blaming films for these vicious shits. I know it's easy slating America's gun culture (to the point of being boring) but it is genuinely disturbing that your average man in the street can buy guns that have no other purpose than to kill people and stockpile bullets the way he was.

My thoughts are with all those affected by the terrible incident.

If anybody gets a chance to listen again to the Jeremy Vine show later, please do. Especially if you want your brain to explode. The first half hour of the show was almost entirely devoted to forwarding the lunatic argurments of most hideous, knee-jerk, tabloid scaremongerers imaginable... Represented in the person of that deranged, dribbling, wingnut Katie Hopkins. All I needed was for that obnoxious, Dickensian wankstain, Simon Warr, to turn up and I think I might have veered my car directly into an oncoming lorry.

I'm also creating a new law to rival Godwins. It will be called Lime's Law and it will be invoked whenever an argument is pre-faced with the words "Speaking as a mother/ father". Namely because what usually follows is, almost without fail, an exercise in the mangling of hysteria and incoherent elephant gun logic.

Or what I refer to as "the Rule of Parental Omniscience", but as Lime's Law is not only shorter but more alliterative I'm happy to go with this instead   Think I'll pass on the Jeremy Vine offer though, I doubt my blood pressure could take the exposure to that prick and his cretinous, in-bred brood of guests.

She really is a colossal fuckwit of the highest order. Its funny to feel so intellectually superior to an Apprentice contestant, makes you realise that the twats on that show really aren't the brightest bunch they're made out to be. And Jeremy Vine is a cunt.

Sadly people such as THIS do not have the voice in the US which could effect change. The thing which the gun lobby do not seem to understand is that change does not mean a blanket ban just to make it more difficult for a deranged individual to access weapons.

They seem to be more up with the times than the NRA whom have a fancier webpage but not mention of recent events or their consideration of it.

Just seen the pictures of him in Court.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-18957991

Is it just me or does he absolutely not have the face of a killer? He just looks so harmless and passive. Aside from the hair. I actually find myself feeling a bit sorry for him in that picture, given that he'll likely face the death penalty.

I know that doesn't excuse what he's done... but it just makes me feel a bit odd about it all. Normally I see pictures of these people and they look like remorseless psychopaths. He just looks mixed up. Like he needs help.

You can find plenty of psychos who look normal and harmless in certain pictures.

Yeah but then I remember that he shot an innocent and harmless six year old girl dead and I don't really care how passive or mixed up he looks. Sure, he needs help but no amount of help he receives will bring that child back to be held in her parents' arms again. I have no sympathy for him at all, actually (although, I am against the death penalty).

Those who look normal and up to a certain point act normally are the most dangerous. Ted Bundy was one such individual whom most of the time came across as a very normal person but behind that façade was truly evil.

Quite similiar to my absolute pet hate. Those who preface their position with the three most dangerous words in the English language..."I just feel......" it's a statement that immediately negates any rational counterpoint because its basically opinion masquerading as fact.

Hear a politician use this phrase, run for the hills.
