Ok i've just watched the news and the bbc refered to murders as 'homicides'......since when did we all started calling a murder a homicide ? is there a new show called CSI Birmingham I dont know about ??
then theres chemists now being called a pharmacy...whats next ? eggplants instead of aubergines ?? sidewalks instead of pavements ?? are we going to see an episode of Taggart where they say "theres been a Homicide" ?

EDIT: S REPLACED WITH ZED !!

Ahem...

That would be "Americanization." With a zed. Not a zee. Definitely not an ess.

Honestly.

Edit: 'sake min. Pedants out in force this fine evening.

Isn't "Homicide" a Latin term anyway? Has someone turned the DPP-Signal on?

Yeah, it's more the scientific definition of murder according to scale and type. Not really an Americanisation.

From Homo and caedes or caedo. Noun caedes = a murder or massacre. The verb caedo meaning to strike/cut/kill.

In Scottish law - in medieval/early modern times anyway - murder was a private act. If the act was done in public it was slaughter.

I have heard people calling the pavement a sidewalk. Also I recently heard someone asking for a zucchini at the supermarket.

I didn't realise until my wedding a couple of years ago that the whole "you may now kiss the bride" was an American thing, nothing to do with Church of England ceremony.

More annoyingly, a little while back I was in the queue (queue, not "line") at Subway, when a bloke in front of me kept saying "get" instead of "have". "Can I get a 6 inch steak and cheese?". "Can I get salad, no jalepenos?". "Can I get cheese Doritos?". "Can I get a bottle of Coke?". That has to be an Americanization doesn't it? Irritated the shit out of me either way!

These americanizations sound a lot like Latinizations.

Didn't the Z in place of S and sidewalk things both actually originate in the UK and were merely used by the Brits who first went over there?

Sure I read or heard that somewhere...Bill Bryson perhaps?

Yeah the whole "Can I get" business really annoys me as well. If I hear anyone say it I nearly always have to fight the urge to tell them "you can get fucked". Not much else bothers me as far as Americanization goes to be honest but that one is a bit of a bugbear.

I can take people saying skedule instead of shedule, I can take people saying sidewalk instead of pavement. I can take people calling cinemas 'theatres' and burgers 'sandwiches'. I can take people saying they so like this or are so going to do something. I can take Subway, Starbucks and the burger chains cluttering up high streets. I can even take people raising their inflection at the end of a sentence, so you're not sure if they're asking a question? The only Americanisation of British society I cannot take is the ever-increasing litigiousness. It makes me fucking sick to my arse.

What is up with that?

There are enough words in existence for the arse but they decided to use one that was already in use for vaginas.

Bunch of fannyholes.

This actually is true, yeah of a lot of these things - there are letters dating from just before people went over to America originally, and they use all sorts of things we think of americanisations. I don't really understand why everyone gets upset about these things, I think its interesting that two cultures which started the same but grew apart from each other and have ever so slightly got different.

Having said that there is the odd one that I can't get used to - I used to write on a blog with a lot of American writers, and their sports terms are strange - uniform instead of kit, healthy instead of fit, roster instead of squad etc. But its difficult to be actively annoyed by them.

I overheard two English students not so long ago talking about their moms.

I'm not too bothered unless I forget to change the language settings of Microsoft Word or Chrome, and I get correction suggestions that use Z instead of S. I'm not wrong dammit!
