was reading Tales from Development Hell the other night and the description of a low budget, more real world, gritty 18 rated Death Wish/French Connection/Taxi Driver style 'Bat-Man' origin taking place in back streets and alleyways had me thinking id have preferred that to Batman Begins.

Bruce taken in after his parents murder by 'Big Al' who runs a garage (elements of Blade) and encounters 'mistress selina' in a brothel and a more Serpico style gordon dealing with corrupt cops, becoming a Rorschach type vigilante starting out wearing a Jason hockey mask with very low tech gadgets before being inspired to create batman through the bat shaped mark produced from his signet ring. and the batmobile simply a souped up car with blacked out windows night goggles and armoured bumpers. working his way up through all the scum to an eventual confrontation with the Police commissioner and Mayor before accepting his destiny as heir to Wayne estate and as 'The Bat-Man.' (also elements of Daredevil in all that)

Batman Begins certainly had some of those elements (also taken from Frank Millers Year One) but nothing as dark, gritty - ultimately becoming a grandiose 12A superhero movie with a race against time train set piece

 I love Nolans Batman, as many do, because it is a proven success. Aronofsky's version sounds fascinating as well. Why not in the future at some point?


As long as it doesn't end up like Sin City, which I like, but Batman needs a little more heart and depth to it.

 Agreed. I remember reading about the direction Aronofsky was going to take the character a good few years ago and whilst I'm a fan of Aronofsky's I think that sounds fucking awful. Big Al and hockey masks. Fuck. That.

And yeah, as Girv asks, why do so many people want an 18 rated Batman?

I can see it working as an Elseworlds graphic novel but not as a re-boot idea, way too many liberties being taken with the Batman legend.

Good question. I think the Dark Knight was gritty enough for Batman and that was a 12A. Also, there is no way in hell Warners will allow it to happen, they need the kids to see the film.

And Big Al and his garage? Bloody Hell.

I'd like to see it. Whether or not I would have preferred to have it over the Nolan Batman series is doubtful. But maybe when they reboot it, which they inevitably will (next year probably at the rate in which Hollywood is churning these superhero movies out), Aronofsky will get the chance to tell that story. Although, probably not. We'll get some brooding, emo Robert Pattinson clone as Batman instead.

Im all for different takes on stories to mix it up a little- give a crowd something different to what they would expect. Based on the successes as a comic book movie and as films in general there isnt a chance in hell I would swap what we have now for Aranofsky had proposed. This current series is just too good.

The post Nolan Batman is very likely to have heavy connections to the JLA world and have a lot of Sci Fi twists. In a way it's good because it allow villains such as Clay face or Mr Freeze. On the other hand this sci fi element in the DC universe often get out of hand and make these comics less credible. Sorry but why in the modern Batman comics everyone either dressing up in fantasy outfit or just plain insane.
Anyway it would be nice if WB create a spin off R rated Batman at the sametime doing kid friendly JLA Batman. This R rated version would be down to Earth, gritty and should be cheap to make compared to the usual heavy special effect Marvel. If not do a TV series set in Gotham and follow a cop. BBC Luthor must be the closes thing to a TV Batman series and they could do a similiar thing. to that.

i agree we might see batman 'do a Bond' and go Moonraker/DAD Sci Fi crazy after so long being all dark and brooding with the Nolan trilogy (i guess BB was a FYEO/CR return to seriousness after the excesses of Schumakers movies) i think Aronofsky’s Bat-Man has already been done to an extent with BatmanBegins (taking the R/18 rated grittiness/darkness as far as it could go for PG13/12A). i remember thinking about how close Begins was to an Aronofsky style Batman at times (confronting Falcone, Balaclava Bruce, the almost Alien style 'I'm Batman!' scene,' the 'lighten up' encounter with scarecrow in the derelict building/Alfred as taxi etc)

 Not instead of, no, but I'd still like to see it happen in future as a paralell reboot. Not everything about DA's version sounded great, but elements of it are right up my street. As st3veebee said further up thread, why not? - it certainly hasn't harmed Spidey (Raimi's 3 aside).

But no way would I have it replace Nolan's, which in terms of live action Bats is pretty definitive in my opinion.

maybe Warners wont do another batman for a good 5 years or so now.. and when they do it might be alot less dark, violent (i doubt anything like Aronofskys version will ever be made)

unless batman turns up in a JLA movie (JGL?)

I'd rather see Wes Anderson's Batman, with Owen Wilson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, and Bill Murray as The Joker.

Well I think Aronovsky's would have been great. I reckon I'd probably have prefered it to the Nolan films. Would have truly 'dark' and 'serious' rather than half-hearted.

After finally seeing TDKR I think whatever is done next id like to see less of a real world approach as in Nolans trilogy (although BB had certain gothic fantasy elements - much more so than TDK/TDKR which felt more like Heat style police action movies set in NYC). going more to the 89 batman - gotham being gothic looking. maybe even a very vague kind of continuation of the burton world, not literally as in batmans parents were killed by joker, joker is dead, penguin was raised by penguins etc - but something of a return to the more gothic fantasy elements (although not so much BR german expressionist stuff), obviously ignoring Schumakers movies. and have batman less known in the world, in the shadows.

I'd like to see it, even if what the OP says about it sounds pretty bad imo.

I love Nolan's films so no, I wouldn't have preferred it.
