I'd say his best work as a writer and director is Planes, Trains and Automobiles. At least the main character in that changes slightly, Ferris is a dick all the way through his movie.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is not a Brat Pack film though, sadly or I would have picked that . I am thinking about changing my answer to St. Elmo's Fire........

Better of dead! (not really brat pack though, but for me the best 80's film of that type)
2nd choice Elmos fire, its like st elmos fire but better :)
