After my you tube montage thread was modded (to be fair there may well be a you tube thread already on page 456 somewhere)
ahem.. Here's a thread on montages in general. I love em! In fact I would go as far as to say they are one of the greatest movie inventions of all time. Especially of course those linked to fighting films.

For me the best to date is rocky II but I also loved the opening montage to UP.

Which montage stands out for you? (and moderators, you are top guys but if there is already a thread on this its likely to be buried along with Ryan Reynolds in the Chamber of secrets!

I think you misunderstood - there is an entire thread solely for youtube links.

This is obviously completely different - all we ask is you have a quick check of search before you post.

I'm never good at remembering these things off the top of my head but the only montage I can think of offhand which I think is amazing is TV rather than film- the end of The Wire.

Rocky sets the bar for montages (in fighting movies at least), with IV being the best.

The Godfather's baptism scene, if that can be counted as a montage, is phenomenal. Boardwalk Empire's subsequent homage to it is pretty great too.

Depends - are those kind of "gearing up" scenes considered a montage? Technically of course we're still seeing a series of shots to shorten the time it takes to watch the whole thing ...

Although, by IV, they are practically just music videos inserted into the film

The Goodfellas Layla montage is one of my favourites. It ends with one of the single greatest shots in all of the movies too, as the camera impossibly zooms in on the meat truck. The Godfather one is fantastic too.

Do the opening sequences of The Departed and Hot Fuzz count? Both good I thought!

The slaughter of the Jedi in Revenge of the Sith, one of the few glimpses of excellence in the prequels.

The beginning of "The Road Warrior". It's not set to music but to a narration:

quote:

My life fades... the vision dims... all that remains are memories.
I remember a time of chaos, ruined dreams, this wasted land. But most of all, I remember the Road Warrior. The man we called Max.
To understand who he was, you have to go back to another time, when the world was powered by the black fuel and the deserts sprouted great cities of pipe and steel. Gone now, swept away.
For reasons long forgotten, two mighty warrior tribes went to war and touched off a blaze which engulfed them all. Without fuel they were nothing. They'd built a house of straw. The thundering machines sputtered and stopped.
Their leaders talked... and talked... and talked. But nothing could stem the avalanche. Their world crumbled, the cities exploded... A whirlwind of looting, a firestorm of fear... Men began to feed on men...On the roads it was a white-line nightmare.
Only those mobile enough to scavenge, brutal enough to pillage would survive. The gangs took over the highways, ready to wage war for a tank of juice.
And in this maelstrom of decay, ordinary men were battered and smashed. Men like Max... The Warrior Max... in the roar of an engine he lost everything... and became a shell of a man... A burnt out, desolate man, a man haunted by the demons of his past. A man who wandered out into the Wasteland.
And it was here, in this blighted place, that he learned to live again.
