Urgh. I'm genuinely wondering now if there is a footballer out there, or indeed anyone who has anything to do with football who isn't a complete twat?

No, they're ALL twats. The actions of the three players involved in this case, the handful of numpties talking rubbish on Twitter and the occasional idiot caught shagging a prostitute or glassing someone prove this conclusively.

Ulysees de la Cruz building a whole village back in Ecuador in the place he grew up to benefit a large group of Ecuadorians notwithstanding? Or Arjan de Zeeuw having a medical science degree and now working in forensics post retirement?

Or is this discussion in keeping with British footballers only as opposed to ALL footballers in general?

They're all twats. Especially the British ones. It said so in the papers. And they never mentioned anything about the thousands of professionals who don't have affairs or crash their cars or call each other 'black cunts' so they clearly don't exist.

I think you missed the point of the post.

Or, I hope that what I thought was the point of the post was indeed the point of the post, and I didnt just make up the point of the post. Which would mean I missed the point, and not you.

Point being, actually not ALL footballers are twats and it's only this 'three', a 'handful' and the 'occasional' idiot.

Ha, no worries - I missed some blatantly obvious sarcasm in the politics thread the other week. Perhaps there's something to be said for those smiley things after all.
Your point about those players you mentioned is bang on though, and you can add similar work done by the likes of Didier Drogba and Craig Bellamy. As well as the countless footballers who simply work hard, focus on their job and treat their fellow pros and fans with dignity and respect. Not much column mileage in them though, is there?

You only have to contrast the Twitter feeds of Rio with a few other footballers, say for instance, Vincent Kompany, to realise how much of a tit he is. Then again, perhaps Kompany isn't representative, since I've heard stories about some footballers from reliable sources which indicates that footballers are, frequently, morons.

Well most of them are young men - given half the chance young men can be quite moronic. But I'd hazard a guess plenty of young cricketers and rugby players are too. It was more the point put forward (both in this thread and in the press) that the Terry/Ferdinand case is symptomatic of an ugliness within the whole game, that it proves once and for all that they're all morons (or twats, or thugs, or everything that is wrong with society) that gets my goat.

Perhaps, though at the very least other sports tend to give more of an impression of attempting to hold their sports people to a higher standard. Footballers are given a very long rope it seems to me. Some years ago a mate of mine used to work for a PL club and he had to step in at the cinema once when one of their reserve team players refused to pay for a cinema ticket, trotting out the whole "Don't you know who I am, I play for X?!". My mate ended up paying for the ticket for him, despite the player earning however many thousands a month for doing pretty much bugger all. He's still a PL player today, incidentally.

I get your point, though I find it hard to deny that (English) football is a very ugly game in almost every way these days. It's actually become almost an effort to be enthusiastic about it, like having to be nice to that family member you don't really like. It's not all down to the players of course, but they certainly don't help.

Hmm, dunno about that. If you think of all the diving, cheating, fighting, corruption, match-fixing, betting scandals, hooliganism and racism that still goes on throughout the rest of europe, our league looks quite tame in comparison and has certainly made more of an effort to get its house in order in relation to some of the things listed above. I agree there's an ugliness in terms of greed and lack of loyalty but I wouldn't say that's a specifically english thing and the other bad side which I think you were alluding to (avaricious agents/owners/chairmen, Sky and the Premiership's blatant disregard for fans in their pursuit of money) is, as you say, nothing to do with the players.
With regards to that anecdote about the reserve at the cinema, I couldn't agree more that that kind of footballer exists and I've met and seen plenty over the years who displayed a similarly egotistical attitude. But it annoys me when people think this is the only kind of professional out there and (while I can only speak from my own experiences and those of people I know) anyone who's visited Newcastle's training ground over the last year or so and seen how open and friendly most of the players are with fans would testify that the idea that they're all pampered, spoilt rich cunts is nothing more than a myth, fuelled in no small part by a football media which loves to dump on its own sport.

I have to say that I've never heard the term 'choc-ice' in either of the ways it has been described before. I only know it as a rather disappointing treat from my youth.

David Luiz is an example of a footballer on Twitter who comes across as a really good bloke. He seems genuinely thankful for being a footballer, and his tweets are often quite funny.

Judging by some of his performances in the first half of last season I'm not surprised he's thankful
I agree though, I've read a few interviews with him where he's come across as quite easy-going and witty, even making self-deprecating jokes about Gary Neville's playstation comments.

Why?

It's an extremely high profile person accused of a pretty heinous act, that we thought we'd eradicated from the game and has been further inflamed by another high profile person.

Four pages is pretty par for the course, I'd say.

That almost sounds impressive until you remember:

a) 11th in a league only 20 seasons old really isn't that high
b) Midfielder Frank Lampard has nearly 25 goals more
c) Emile Heskey only has 15 fewer
d) If Dwight Yorke, Ian Wright and Le Tiss had their pre-Premier League totals from their careers carried over rather than struck from the record they would bump him down to 14th

I've heard choc ice being used as an insult in the way Ferdinand claims he used it a lot. I have no idea if the etymology is racist or not though, I wouldn't be surprised to hear it is if it's being used round here. That being said I've heard it being used towards people regardless of skin colour, mainly towards white people if anything. Pretty much everyone in my neck of the woods is white though so...

I'm not sure what's so perplexing about it - the whole sorry case and the final verdict could have (and in many ways already has) massive implications for the future of football in this country and as there's a lot of fans on here it's raised a host of related issues to do with the perceptions and conduct of professional footballers, the returning spectre of racism and the morality of the game itself, which a lot of us appear to have strong opinions about.
Seems pretty four-page worthy to me.

A bunch of football fans have spent four pages discussing a news story of major importance to the world of football.
Very confusing.

Point is he should have kept his mouth shut. If he didn't understand the racist connotations of the term "choc ice" when publicly commenting on a major race case then he is obviously not intellectually responsible enough to provide commentary on Twitter to thousands of fans. I suspect he did understand the consequences of using the term..

It's difficult to prove, particularly if he can show it does have another, pertinent, meaning.

Can't say I've ever heard it in that context myself - I thought the relevant offensive terms was a coconut based chocolate bar?

I've heard it used in the 'black on the outside, white on the inside' context before. To be honest I haven't heard it used any other way.

Me neither, but when I heard this story I just assumed it was a modern-day variant of the phrase you've alluded to.

What if it's chocolate ice cream in it?

My mind, when I first heard it, went to the 'useful as a chocolate fireguard' type saying.
