"Police Squad! In Color"

This must surely be the most joke-laden opening sequence in all of TV. Drebin returning fire in the wrong direction, Abraham Lincoln, the different guest star deaths for each episode, the incorrect titles. Add to that Ira Newborn's fantastic score and the shot that followed the police siren you have a true classic.

But, Police Squad is that rarest of shows that has a closing credits sequence that can match the opening. The actors simply stop moving yet the action continues, each episode being slightly more silly than the last, culminating with the squad collapsing around the cast. Absurd and utterly brilliant

The cars are approaching the starting line. First, is the Turbo Terrific driven by Peter Perfect. Next is Rufus Ruffcut and Sawtooth in the Buzzwagon. Maneuvering for position is the Army Surplus Special. Right behind is the Ant Hill Mob in their Bullet Proof Bomb. Then there's ingenious inventor Pat Pending in his Convert-A-Car. Oh! Here's the lovely Penelope Pitstop, the glamour gal of the gas pedal. Next we have the Bouldermobile with the Slag Brothers, Rock & Gravel. An immensely effective opening and one that still creeps me out slightly. Mark Snow's theme is superb. It was changed in later this but this original version is a classic.

Closing credits this time. Maid Marian is still the best ever attempt at putting Robin Hood on screen, big or small, and the animation and song rounded up every episode in style.

 5. The Pillars Of The Earth


The most recent show in the top 10 and one that features a orgasmically gorgeous animation. It's quite possible that, were it not for nostalgia and lifelong affection for the 4 shows remaining, Pillars could top this list, but 5th place seems right for now. Anyone know if there's a specific terms for this kind of animation? I'm sure I read something about it once but have completely forgot.

As sung by Bud Flanagan, the theme for Dads Army was probably one of my very earliest favourite songs. Accompanied by the animation of the swastika-headed arrows pushing the Union Jack's back over the channel, it's a brilliant intro and the final show that isn't necessarily for kids. And let's not forget the closing credits, as TV's greatest cast make their way across a battlefield.

It's saddening that, googling for a suitable picture for this entry, I came across so many pictures for The Mr. Men Show, the utter abomination that has polluted the airwaves over the last few years. Nothing about it can even begin to come close to the genius brilliance of the original Mr. Men tv show from the 70s.

The title sequence differed for every episode and usually included that episode's character in some way. The word Laxy morphed into My Lazy, Mr. Bump walked into his own titles, Mr. Strong bent an iron bar to form his name ad Mr Bounce himself took place off the O in his name. All used the lovely them tune by Tony Hyams and all were superb.

I feel sorry for this show. Anyone under the age of 25 has probably never heard of it, and those much over 30 were probably too old for it when it first aired. But's it's an amazing brilliant show and one that I adore to this day. The entire series can be seen in about 45 minutes and it's guaranteed to brighten even the darkest of days. They're all up on youtube. Go and watch.

Terrys Wogan's provides the vocals for the show and his narration as the characters make their entrances in perfect. And the deliciously oddball music is glorious. I have it as my mobile ringtone

Was there ever any doubt? This was always going to be the number one spot.

It changed slightly for each episode and evolved over the years but each variation and addition was brilliantly madcap. I couldn't pick one style of credits over the others but my favourite gag was always Gonzo's apperance right at the end.
