96. Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds

"One for one and all for one, Muskehounds are always ready"

My hope is that everyone now has that song stuck in their head for the rest of the day. I rewatched some episode of this a few years back and it hadn't aged as well as I hoped but it still beats most kids shows from today. It's the insanely annoying yet undeniably memorable song that's the reason Dogtanian makes this list.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-xO72s5EBY

When I was a bit older, and actually listened to the song I was convinced they were singing "...shagging everything we find..." Apologies for lowering the tone

Lots of nostalgia for kids shows here, but some of the top intro for me will be action and cop shows from the 70s/80s. It helps that the theme tunes were frickin awesome, but those cheesy montages were so memorable... B.A busting the door off the bar in the A-Team intro being my personal fave.

And quick question Gimli - these are fave intros right? Not necessarily your fave shows. Because personally speaking there have been some awesome tv intros over the years - but I can't say he show that follows it has been great.

I shall expect to see Red Dwarf. Or do end titles not count in this one?

End titles do count. There will be a few.

Just fave intros, not shows. Some of the shows are pretty bad

90. Buck Rogers in the 25th Century

"The year is 1987, and NASA launches the last of America's deep space probes. In a freak mishap, Ranger 3 and its pilot, Captain William Buck Rogers, are blown out of their trajectory into an orbit which freezes his life support systems, and returns Buck Rogers to Earth, 500 years later."

This has it all. Slightly shonky 70s effects, an ominous voiceover provided by the great William Conrad and an ace theme tune that, thanks to a cassette of sci-fi Tv tunes, was a favourite of mine at least a decade before I'd even seen the show.

89. The Shield

The pre-credits sequence of each episode of The Shield was broken by the black screen featuring the names of cast members (the only other show I can think of like this is The Closer. Any others?), an effect which could be slightly disconcerting especially during the shaky-cam chase sequences. Only then would the title appear. A short but, much like the show, very in your face sequence.

I thought The Shield lost its way as a show after the first few seasons. Is it bad that I can't even remember the credit sequence?

88. Sesame Street

"Sunny day sweeping the clouds away. On my way to where the air is sweet"

If proof were needed that this list is based on titles alone and not a love of the show it's the placement of Sesame Street. The show itself would be in my top 10 but the intro just can't reach the the great heights of the show. But it does feature a brilliantly memorable theme. It's changed over the years but this version here from the mid-80s is, for me, the "proper" one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL4LOTLIdH4

OT, but the episode featured in that above link also contains one of the greatest moments in TV history, Cookie Monster singing about how he lost his cookie at the disco.

Yes. Very bad. It was never as good as S1-3 but it reached a point where I just had to know what was going to happen, no matter how far-fetched it became.

If the song had been played over images of Ernie and Bert or something, it'd be top 5 material

Do you remember the bit at the end of season one where Dutch is interrogating a suspect with everyone watching and he starts with something like "I do have a girlfriend..." and you think he's going to humiliate himself at first? The later seasons didn't have anything like that for me, nothing as dramatically powerful as the way that scene played out.

That was a brilliant scene. Dutch was a great character but wasn't often given moments to shine.

Didn't he kill a cat later in the series? I have a hazy memory of that.

Anyway, I hope The Adventures of Pete and Pete is in this list.

Two different intros for this show and they both changed over time. The first appeared at the very start of every episode and offered a brief recap of the Cylons, information changing as the story unfolded. A short segment that would be massively spoilerific for anyone who hadn't seen the show up to that point. The second was a fairly standard title sequence featuring clips from the show but with the added bonus of a population count, an addition that I loved. It took into account deaths both onscreen and off and also served as a reminder of previous events.

The links are SPOILERS if you haven't seen the show!

86. The King Kong Show

"King Kong, you know the name of King Kong, you know the fame of King Kong, ten times as big as a man!"

Everybody knows the 1933 original film, most try and wipe the existence of the 1976 remake from their memories and those with good taste all think the 2005 film is the best. But let's not forget this animated show from the late 60s. Or perhaps we should forget, as it's far from great, But it has an ace opening.

Nifty animation but a superb tune from John Williams. I haven't seen this show in god knows how long but I used to love it.

One of many intros that makes this list ion the music alone. It's a superb, catchy piece of music and was responsible for one of the best jokes in live action cinema in the 2000s.

Good list! Seven of those are in mine, a few just missed out. I've seen a couple of the others but not within the context of the show - Freaks and Geeks/Northern Exposure. Look like ace shows.

Lots of good stuff in here.

Like Gimli, I found The Shield pretty compulsive right till the end, even if it did teeter once too often on ludicrousness. But by the end it did need more moments like Dutch killing the cat (which was pretty damn chilling) or the episode where he captures the serial killer he's been after all series - but the next day, everyone is treating him like normal again.

Might have to start a rewatch of that now.
