I was so glad that Clowny mentioned another one bites the dust! I thought the world had gone mad for a second!

I would also like to throw in Under Pressure to the mix which has one of the most recognisable base lines ever!

And a personal fav of mine is "No One Knows" by Queens of the Stone Age

 Some more songs I have been listening to recently and thought: By Gosh, this song has a nift bassline!

-Music for Chameleons: Gary Numan. Ok so Alan Partridge has made the song impossible not to air bass to, as well as taking it seriously...but the riff on this song is seriously catchy. I also love the slow build at the start, just like the one in......


-Moving in Stereo, The Cars.  Again a song that has been slightly tainted by it's association to a certain sequence in a film. Regardless the riff in this is incredibly powreful despite the simplicity. Impossible not to dance/air bass to.


Not so much of a riff thoughout but the bass playing in Run to the Hills  by Iron Maiden  is bloody fantastic. Seriously quick in parts and a driving heartbeat to an all time classic.

 I was feeling quite smug that no one had suggested Seven Nation Army yet, but then found out that it was just a very low-tuned guitar and that was probably the reason why.

Well, given that Another One Bites The Dust shamelessly rips off the great Bernard Edwards more masterful riff from Chic's Good Times, I'd have been more than happy for nobody to mention it (sorry Gimli!).  Even the Sugarhill Gang made better use of it than John Deacon.

Good call on QOTSA - used to enjoy playing that one in the band but the hassle of drop-C tuning eventually led to it being shelved in favour of The Sky Is Fallin', which has some more sterling work from Nick Oliveri to master.

Quite possibly the most perfect song (in a career littered with perfect songs) the mighty Queens ever did.
Some amazing bass-lines from the Oliveri-era, the aforementioned Give The Mule What He Wants, You Can't Quit Me Baby, Auto-Pilot and In The Fade are particular stand-outs.
One of my best live memories of them was at Manchester in 2003 when Nick seamlessly segued the Day In The Life-esque bass bit in the middle of No One Knows into Feel Good Hit Of The Summer which they then played in its entirety before fading out and mutating back into No One Knows. Awesome stuff.

I like Good Times and Rapper's Delight and the similarity is obvious, but my ear for music is so useless I never once connected them to Dust, even though I knew Deacon was inspired by the Chic song. I still can't make out any noticeable connection.

Liar would be my pick of a Queen song for some good bass.

 I would say that quite few songs with Peter Hook on bass has some cool riffs.

Transmission, Shadowplay, True Faith and Regret spring to mind.

 How about a more modern song?:

Pumped up kicks by Foster the People has a brilliantly catchy bassline, even if I find the rest of the song after the great intro a little dull.


I'm also getting back into Primus again, Claypool was/is a genius on the bass .
