How many current screen comedians can generate genuine laughs without shocks & outrage? Beyond Will Ferrell, not many. I once sat beside him in a bar that he regularly frequented in southern Spain, he cradled a beer, puffed a cheroot, exchanged some low-key banter with the staff, and left without fuss. After he went away, they said that he was always the same, never bombastic, always polite & low-key. Loved his autobiography, 'If I don't write this, nobody else will' & he told a nice story about him & Sean Connery coming back in a limo from the set of the awful Brigitte Bardot western 'Shalako', and stopping at a totally isolated roadside bar, where they spent the afternoon drinking an entire bottle of whisky for the equivalent of about 20p. Brilliant timing; always regret that because of lost finances, they had to cancel filming mid-way through another of his (almost) silent movies, 'If you go down in the woods today', which had him and Ronnie Corbett as Scout Masters taking a group into the forest, only to inadvertently uncover a nest of ruthless Soviet spies. A sad loss, RIP.
