Ripping a DVD for Handbrake - 4/7/2012 9:22:51 PM

 I would normally use DVD Decrypter to rip DVDs and Handbrake to convert them for my iPad, but I have come accross 2 recently that wont rip with Decrypter. Probably because its no longer supported and therefore not up to date....

Can anyone recommend (ideally with a link) any other free software to rip DVDs for Handbrake?

Use Handbrake. It rips DVDs... and well.

 I can never get Handbrake to rip DVDs. I tried for ages to get it to do the one I have of my friend's wedding and there was no way to do it. I did find another programme, but I don't recall what it's called. I'll have a look when I get home on Saturday though, if this problem hasn't been solved yet.

 I gave up ripping with Handbrake after a few fails, but that was from a friends DVD.....I'll try again!

You can't rip straight from DVD with a vanilla copy of handbrake I don't think, it can't get round the CSS encryption that comes on most DVD's.

You'll have to download a program like AnyDVD or DVD43, they're both background apps that run on the fly and remove protection & region coding as the disc is being read, Handbrake should rip straight from DVD so long as one of those is running.

Thanks Paulyboy. So, if I download either of these programs, I don't need to open/run them when I insert the DVD, they just automatically do their thing and Handbrake should then work?

Yarp. They run (minimised as tray icons) in the background so once installed just use Handbrake as normal, should all work then hopefully.

Is it different on Windows to Mac?

Have ripped around 20 DVDs so far using Handbrake on a MacBook Pro.

Haven't the foggiest sadly, just know that Handbrake refused to play ball on XP & Windows 7 until I installed AnyDVD.

 I can rip dvd's fine on my macbook, but my win7 pc struggles, but apparently it's due to dvd drivers or something like that.

So perhaps thia anyDVD software has something else in it!

Yeah, even sweeping aside the copy protection issue, you need some form of DVD decrypting library present or Handbrake won't work with DVD's anyway, neither will Windows Media Player for that matter.

PowerDVD, VLC Media Player etc, they all install the runtimes/plugins needed.

Beyond that you may still need something to strip of the CSS encryption, like AnyDVD etc.

Really all depends on what's already installed by way of playback software.

I wouldn't get DVD43 btw, I downloaded it last night and it came with malware. And AnyDVD isn't free software.

Anyone used DVD Shrink?

I use it when I need to mess about and add subs - it works for most of the DVDs I've tried with it but not all. I'm not sure if it's a distributor thing and it's just a certain type of disc it doesn't like - but it was annoying trying to get VLC to play the subs over the DVD proper. It's free though - no malware or anything. Doesn't Autogk rip DVDs as well? I'm sure that's what I've used for some of my Korean TV series to pull off individual epis.

Yup.

Anyways tested out handbrake last night, damn thing took an hour to rip a single disc and used up pretty much all of my CPU so I couldn't do a thing on the pc till it had finished. End result was OK, main problem was it didn't come with the foreign part subs which I had ticked and it looked very American tv, like that 30fps look. Will have to give it another go.

Does DVD Shrink work with AnyDVD?

I've no idea as I've never used it - what would anydvd be doing?

Subs generally can be found as a separate file if your rip hasn't pulled them off - you can use something like autogk to pull out the file from the DVD and then hardcopy the English sub to that (there's a thread in World Cinema for good subs sites).

And all kudos to people who basically write the sub for a film themselves so people can buy DVDs from absolutely anywhere whether they're subtitled or not

 Ok, I'm not a computer fiend, so the above chatter has kinda confused me!

Is there a free piece of software that will remove the protections on DVDs (I am assuming that was the issue)? Does DVD Shrink do that?

As an update, I installed the trial version of AnyDVD and it all worked perfectly. I was able to rip/convert to iPad in one step with Handbrake.....but sadly only for another 20 days!

Not all DVDs have the same protections and some have protections that very few program can translate. For any ripping program, cracking that code will be part of the rip. .

It does, but not without ripping to the hard drive first, so kind of defeats the point of ripping direct with Handbrake.
