The fact that Murdoch has no time for scientology actually makes me hate him a little bit less.

He has his own cult - the cult of the corporate sociopath

But at least he only tries to sell me internet, sport and movies.

You people have it all wrong. Its got nothing to do with Scientology.Katie was a big fan of the Jack Reacher novels and was outraged at the idea of Cruise being cast in the film adaptation.

( Ok maybe not ).

I haven't read this entire thread so this might already have been raised, but I often wonder if Holmes never went on to play Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight due to outside intervention. She made some crappy comedy instead that sank without a trace.

I was going to ask that, always thought her recasting was an odd choice. The character had so little to do in the Dark Knight that it was more trouble than it was worth to get rid of her. And it was total madness if she chose not to be in it.....also as much as I like Maggie Gillenhall (or however you spell it, there's a y in there somewhere) Kate was a better choice.

I got suckered into taking one of their personality tests, once.

I was 18, just started university and was dawdling along the high street when some random guy asked me if I wanted to take the test. Being a bit naive and bored at the time, I thought "why not?" and thought I'd give it a go.

I wish I could remember all the exact details, but there was about 100 or so questions which was the first thing that set off the warning signs, as did the fact that they went from fairly innocent "how do you feel first thing in the morning?" to more bizarre stuff like, "If a neighbouring country invaded, how would you react?".

I then had to wait around for 20 minutes while the results were analysed before a woman tried to convince me that I was a person in desperate need of help, only they could give me.

By this point, I'd already realised what it was about and was more amused than anything, but was also put off by the fact that the woman stank of B.O.

Me too, I was wandering around Dublin one day bored off my tits waiting for a friend and was asked to do a "personality test" after I got through a few questions I started to notice the "certificates" on the wall. I scribbled out my personal details and left.
I should have put some one elses name on it and answered the questions in a "physchotic" way.

I would have preferred Holmes to have been back in it as well - no idea why she didn't do it, it just seems a dumb move if she refused.

The story at the time the recasting was announced was that Katie had seriously pissed off the powers-that-be at Warners by using all the marketing events to talk about her marriage and her religion instead of the movie.  However, it was also said that she had been offered the role again but had turned it down to do another movie.  I guess it's up to you to decide which one to believe...

Shouldn't it be "masseur" (allegedly!)?

They are frighteningly similar there.

I wonder if they've ever used the same masseur services? Hmmmm....

I remember being so disappointed when I found out half the people involved in My Name Is Earl were scientologists. I was never able to enjoy it in the same way again.

Is it true burly men in Scientology suits are now following Katie (NO CALL HER KATE!) around?

Well, she was filming this at the same time-

And a lot of TDK was shot in England, while Mad Money was shot in the US. What you said makes sense too though, Elab but who knows what the real truth is?

Half the people? I thought it was just Lee and Ethan Suplee. I know they're the two main characters, but the show was hardly forcing Scientology beliefs (Scientological?) down your throat.

I didn't enjoy the later seasons mainly because they were crap.

Quite a few of the other side cast members (including Giovanni "Vonni" Ribisi - one of a very small number of celebs raised scientologist) and crew are scientologists, but Greg Garcia (who is NOT a scientologist) claims that it's merely a coincidence, using most of the rest of the main cast (none of whom are scientologists or, at least, have said they are) and writers as proof of that.

There are quite a few theories on the web that say the basic premise of the show is very similar to certain scientologist teachings, but the response to that is usually "but if it's just telling you to be a good person, what does it matter?!?!?" There's certainly been nothing in the show (as far as I remember) about believing in alien ghosts or any promotion of cash pyramid schemes with religion as a front, but you could also argue that the whole thetan levels thing bears remarkable similarities to the spiritual well being (or otherwise) of the characters in the show.

It probably IS just coincidence - you can read anything into anything if you try hard enough.

From a Guardian article a few years back http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2007/jun/09/tvandradio.broadcasting1

quote:

The Scientology-Earl connection begins with Earl himself - actor Jason Lee is a Scientologist, as is show creator Greg Garcia and Ethan Suplee who plays Earl's slow-reader brother Randy. So far, so creepy. But there has also been a guest appearance from Juliette Lewis, Suplee's sister-in-law and a practising Scientologist. Also down with the Church is Giovanni Ribisi, who plays recurring character Ralph Mariano. Church membership beats the crap out of having a union card and relevant experience, some might suggest.

True, except for the Greg Garcia bit - that was all started by Alec Baldwin because the two were having an ongoing spat. Garcia appeared on a national US show (I forget which one), said he wasn't, never had been and never planned to be or become a scientologist, and was never under any pressure to do so. He then called Baldwin an idiot.

I remember when one female sitcom star was referred to as the most obnoxiously proselytising Scientologist in Hollywood that the article also talked about the active recruitment on certain sets for the cult, sometimes condoned by non-Co$ producers but at the behest of the star. I've seen references to on-set recruitment before - and, obviously, some clearly see it as a career move. The most amusing rumour was that Lohan actually visited one of the centres after her last kerfuffle rather than heading straight to the set.

You could easily argue it the other way, though...

But yeah - I hope she does get sole custody too, otherwise that kid's gonna be turned into a mentalist. Katie Holmes seems like too level headed a person for her to lose out on this.

But I suppose all it takes is for Travolta to land a plane in court and use his mind magic ways.
