 I'm currently doing a write up about iconic superhero images, and my mind drifted onto the tragically awful Superman Returns. It always irks me that the director of my favourite comic book adaptation (X Men), is also the director of one of the worst. Are there any other directors, producers, writers or actors who have proven to be top notch in one incarnation and the polar opposite in another (and not just made a good film then made a not so good one, I'm talking reached really excellent heights and then plummeted)? Can you think of any cases where the roles are reversed and someone who is notoriously shite has turned it around and unexpectedly knocked it out of the park?

 I think Coppola is the obvious one - defined the modern gangster film with The Godfather and then made The Godfather Part 3.

 Kevin Billington. The Rise and Rise of Michael Rimmer is one of the greatest and most underrated comedy films ever made. Voices is one of the worst films ever made. I tried to persuade myself for the longest time that it wasn't as bad as most horror fans claimed, but it really is.

 Considering Ridley reached new levels of awful with Robin Hood, I doubt Prometheus is the clunker he'll be picked up on.

 '80s action directors are notorious for it:

James Cameron - Terminator and Aliens to Titanic and Avatar. Ouch.
John McTiernan - Predator and Die Hard to Rollerball and Basic (and jail).
Paul Verhoeven - Robocop and Total Recall to Showgirls and The Hollow Man (though obviously he gets a let-off for fitting in the awesome Starship Troopers in between)
Martin Brest - Beverly Hills Cop and Midnight Run to Meet Joe Black and G****.

 As for the other way round, while I wouldn't call his work shite, Curtis Hanson was pretty much known for generic, workmanlike thrillers pre-LA Confidential. That the director of The Bedroom Window and The Hand That Rocks The Cradle managed to forge a modern masterpiece out of such notoriously difficult source material is some leap.

American Graffiti > Star Wars (Lord Lucas)

Shallow Grave/Trainspotting > A Life Less Ordinary> The Beach> Olympic Opening Ceremony…. (Danny Boyle)


As for turning it around I didn’t see Affleck becoming the director he has, even if I’m not a fan of The Town it’s well made and Gone Baby Gone is still a terrific piece.

That's a good one. Haven't seen either of the films yet, but I think it's amazing that Afleck can leave the house after Giglie, let alone go on to function as a walking talking real life director.

I actually thought Reb was going for something more specific with her original post tbh (the idea of a director making a really good superhero film, and then a really poor one being her initial example in Singer), so thats why I went for the two gangster flicks in the same directors body of work.
