Jack Reacher casting row and Batman

This might be a bit of a long shot but with everyone moaning about Tom Cruise being cast as Jack Reacher. While Cruise's physical attributes don't come close to matching the character in the book, it strikes me that it's very similar to the similarly sized Michael Keaton being cast as Batman - another character known for his ridiculous physique.

notice in this months issue it states Cruise is 5ft 9...

 I've been following this story for a couple of months now, I've never read any of the Reacher books but as I understand it the character is a man mountain, a human force of nature and Tom Cruise is going to play him.........

I think the fans of the series may have a valid grumble myself !

That's always the problem with film casting though. Do you go for the right actor or the right look?

It's very rare that you get both spot on. Tom Cruise clearly doesn't have the physique to play Reacher (I've only read one book by the way) but to my mind he'll probably bring the intensity and single mindedness that the character needs.

Plus he'll bring people who haven't necessarily heard of Jack Reacher - from a commercial point of view.

 Think Tom Cruise is going to compensate for any lack of bulk and stature by being very physical in the movie and throwing himself into all the stunts.

 I'm not a fan of Reacher so was quite happy to see Cruise attached to the role (I'm a big fan of Cruise). My missus loves the books tho and grumbled very muchly.

There was a lot of controversy over the casting of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine way back when, given the diminutive nature of the character (5'3") compared to the 6ft plus of Jackman. People got over it tho, and now it's difficult to think of anyone else in the role.

That is apparently his official height but people have informed that once the "big" boy shoes are off 5'7" is more realistic.

Personally I dislike the books quite a lot (I read two of them) but I get the impression the general feel of the character will have to change as there is an awful lot made about his presence in the books.

The problem with comparing it with Wolverine is that Wolverine is a very short bloke whose presence could be deemed to be enhanced by the rather statuesque Jackman whilst Cruise being rather diminutive may detract. That said I get the impression this Reacher is going to be a very different beast to in the books.

I've never even heard of the books so the only thing that interests me here is Cruise.

He may be small but he does have a big presence.

 Haven't read te book sso my opinion is perhaps less valid..but as small as Cruise can appear in life I have rarely stopped mid film and thought " By Gob, that man is an imp!".

Gravitas, camerawork or visual trickery: whatever it is the end result is that he is a dominating screen presence.

 Cruise climbed the tallest building in the world and even sat on top of it - with no stunt double. He's probably short because his balls weigh him down so much. He could play Gandhi and I'd still want to watch him.

 The man has balls...big balls.....does he have a massive ego? Maybe that unshakeable belief in himself means he doesnt allow him to feel fear? \Whatever. I'm not as against his playing Reacher as I was, but as a new franchise I would have liked them to start with a new face. Who knows what we'll get in the end.........

reading Tales from Development Hell the other night and in the batman section it states M Gibson. B Murray, P Brosnan, C Sheen and A Baldwin were all on the short list to play batman. can totally see Gibson and Baldwin (youd have thought hed have been the more likely choice out of him and Keaton)

been looking at suggestions for JR and the names that keep coming up are Ray Stevenson (6ft 4), G Butler (6 2)and Josh Lucas (6 2) obviously none of them have the pulling power of Cruise but are around the correct height/build
