Every good movie (and a few bad ones!) has a great theme tune - an instantly recognisable piece of music which, when you hear it, you just know exactly what film it is without even having to think.

Mine are:

JAWS
Raiders of the Lost Ark (The Raiders March)
633 Squadron
Battle of Britain
The Dam Busters March
Rocky ("Gonna Fly Now")
First Blood ("It's a Long Road" instrumental)
Back to the Future

Go on, list yours....

(I realise this could be better placed in the Soundtracks section, but since it's not really about the soundtracks, per se, I felt it more appropriate to go in Favourite Films.)

Back to the Future makes even the most mundane situation kinda epic: going on the bus and suddenly I'm Marty McFly off on an adventure of awesomeness.

I adore Jurassic Park as well, when it gets going I can't help but get goosebumps.

Other notable classic themes:

-Lawrence of Arabia
-Jaws (duh)
-Batman (both the Elfman and Zimmer score)
-North by Northwest
-The Pink Panther
-Terminator 2 score
-Gremlins

I think everyone would agree with Jurassic Park, if I hear that piece of music I have the watch the film. Off the top of my head some of my faves are...

Starship Troopers!
Speed is a good one too...
L'Alba Dei Morti Viventi - Dawn of the Dead
And lots of Ennio Morricone. Anything from the Dollars trilogy is awesome.

Indy theme
Jurassic Park
Jaws
Star Wars (main theme and The Imperial March)
Superman

...John Williams is a true genius. Also, these:

James Bond main theme
Chariots of Fire
The Great Escape
Gone with the Wind
Love Story
The Magnificent Seven
The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
The Untouchables
Rocky
The Delta Force
The Pink Panther

But the piece of music - and film - which holds a special place in my heart is Henry Mancini's "Baby Elephant Walk" from Hatari!

I'd have to agree with all of those ( love Hatari, good call.), except Delta Force which I've not seen.

I'll add
The Thing - Carpenter's. That bass is sooooo good, doom, doom.
Betty Blue
Deliverance (could Duelling Banjos be considered the theme ? I guess not but I'll add it anyway ).
The Day The Earth Stood Still 1951

Shouldn't it technically go in the 'Lists' forum?

I'm usually very good at naming films when I hear the theme but here are a select few-

The Raiders March
Back to the Future
Police Academy
Gremlins
Ghostbusters (the song and the theme)
Superman
Edward Scissorhands
Batman '89
The Pink Panther
Axel F from Beverly Hills Cop
Star Wars
The Goonies (the song and themes)
Halloween
Predator
Tango & Cash

It's one of my favourites, I even had it as my ringtone on my old phone

it's a shame that it is basically the only piece of music you hear in the entire series of Police Acedmy films. Well, that and the Blue Oyster Tango......
