I still enjoyed it after he was introduced. I only remember the bare bones of the story, the main thing I recall was looking forward to each new issue of the Eagle to get my Doomlord fix. I haven't read any of it since it ended when I was about 13. It's a shame it hasn't received a collected edition, I'd love to give it another read

I love Collected editions, we need more. WH Smith has done a few exclusive ones for Buster, Roy of the Rovers and Beano Summer Specials to name but three.

In the late 80s, Marvel UK decided to belatedly jump on the bandwagon with It's Wicked.Clearly based on Monster Fun and Shiver and Shake, this collection of creepy comic tales had Slimer from the Real Ghostbusters as its cover star. Oddly, he was the only name character as all the rest were created for the comic. One of the quickest reads, ever at about 16 pages but with big panelled strips, it really was atrocious. It only lasted 17 issues and I have two. I don't want any more.

Probably the rarest comics in my collection, I have three issues of a Scooby Doo And His TV Friends comic published by Marvel UK all the way back in 1982....

I was a Beano fan as a kid, and even though I eventually grew out of it I still have an issue somewhere in my bedroom that is still hilarious (particularly the Bash Street Kids story).

It always reminds me of boiling hot Summer days at my grandparents house where I'd go down the street, get my copy, go back and read it, and then we'd all go to the beach and turn into lobsters.

Did you ever get the Summer specials? I remember buying the Dandy, Beano, Topper, Buster and Beezer ones on an annual basis and would get whatever ones I could after that. For example, the Bananman ones weren't annual, and I'd get as many Marvel UK ones as I could (again they weren't annual). There was only one Junior Rotter from Whizzer and Chips Holiday Special (see the photo on the first page) which was all reprints but I remember having it when I was a kid. I managed to buy it a couple of years ago on Ebay.

I really really want to get more, as many as possible, the more obscure the better. I also have one called Top Dog which is a character I vaguely remember being in the Get-A-Long Gang comic. Here is a photo of the Marvel UK comics I have (barring the Indy and Scooby ones I have already posted), I don't have anywhere near as many as I'd like.



Again, sorry for the size. And I know a couple of these aren't really aimed at kids, but I just lumped them together. How obscure is that William Tell one?

Thinking about it I didn't really read it that long, it was only when I moved to the UK in early '95 that I started, and I stopped towards the end of '97 when I moved schools and it was no longer "cool"

I was quite lucky, I had a few friends that also bought comics that I would swap them with. I pretty much read them for a good part of a decade. Once I hit my teens, I gave up on them.

I quite enjoy collecting them now, though.

I was a member of The Beano Club though, I think it cost £10 for life or a year or something. I can't remember what the benefits were though

Feels like a lifetime ago that I considered that to be a huge amount of money.

I didn't join it, myself. I remember you could get badges, one of Dennis, one of Gnasher and I think they had googly eyes. Not sure.

I remember sending a visual joke into Buster once and I won a crappy plastic orange sled, which was just the shape of my buttocks and had a handle. It was a very shitty design.

This was a great comic, I still have a copy around somewhere. I remember those fangs cut my gums up something rotten.



i have to admit that personally I was more a fan of Fleetway than DC Thomson comics.

Yeah, I was probably more into Fleetway too. I read them all, but Buster and Whizzer and Chips were definitely my favourites. And Scream was such a great comic. For those that don't know, it was a horror comic that got banned after 15 issues because parents thought it was too scary for kids. I thought it was awesome and my mum didn't care that I read it.

There is a website for it here that has every issue including a Holiday Special online for you to read.

Ok, I won't allow this thread to die. I won a competition on Facebook a month ago and just got my prize today. It was this awesome Dennis and Gnasher figurine from Robert Harrop designs-



It's old school Dennis, which is bloody great. Plus, it was hand painted and limited to 100 pieces (I got number 72). Here is the designer's site that has some more great Dandy and Beano figurines, I'd love the Bananaman one-click

Steflon- You should really looks these out. What time period are they, roughly? And I love Buster too, I have a good few of them from the late 80s, early 90s.

I've been buying some Marvel UK comics on Ebay recently. Last week, I bought the comic adaptation of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade from 1989. It's in great condition and got it for £1.80, only 65p more expensive than it was back then

Anyway, it's a pretty faithful adaptation, here's a page-

One thing I have noticed about older comics is the casual racism. It was still evident in the 80s, here is a page from the Dandy Comic Library number 75 called Ali-Ha-Ha and the Forty Thieves. It is dated 1986.....



I'm pretty sure even at 9 years old, I thought that was pretty dodgy. I remember being offended at the Scottish stereotype before I understood the comic's origins. And of course, who can forget Little Plum? This from The Beano number 2285 dated May 3rd 1986-

The fact that they are both from the same year is a coincidence, it's the only Plum strip I have....

 It was only really ever The Beano for me, god I used to love it! Can't remember exactly what years I read it but I was born in '82 so I guess up until early 90s. Used to like the annuals too.

Also had the odd Whizzer and Chips annual I seem to recall.

This thread has made me want to get hold of some Beanos now! I never really read anything like 'Commando', but I've seen the big collections you buy. Tempted.

Oh, the Jocks and the Geordies. This nicely leads me onto Comic Libraries-



I used to love buying these things, they were great. 64 pages (minus covers) of a complete story starring one character, two or three different characters (sometimes from different comics) and even a story of all Beano or Dandy characters. The Dandy ones in particular were my favourite and they have a reputation of hardly actually featuring actual Dandy characters in the early days. Like so-



And, as I said, the often had ensembles-



And crossovers-



Plus, before The Nutty joined with The Dandy, Bananaman could be found in the Beano comic libraries.....



Oh, and they even had special issues....



Anyone else have love for these back in the day?
