I dont know about anyone else but I am sick and tired of WAITING for the ability to get (as promised a LONG time ago) free IPad digital issues of the mag as a paper subscriber. For such a large, respected magazine to let this drag on for so long ... well its beyond a joke and just makes them look incompetent and foolish, we've heard all the excuses about it being the software developers fault etc etc its not acceptable anymore.

Anyway, my subscription is due to end soon, wont be renewing it because of this lunacy, will just look at my friends copy instead though he his planning to cancel his subscription in 5 months also for the same reason.

If you take the time to read the existing thread I think you'll find it's not to do with software but down to HMRC and tax issues - they won't allow the issue to be given away free.

IT men, Tax men .... What next, little green men from outerspace? Its just an ongoing blame game and Im not going to waste another years subscription until this is sorted out, its been promised for a long time and many folk like me started/kept subscriptions on the basis of that promise and its interesting to note you offer no apology mr moderator but instead try to infer I havent bothered to read threads.

"...if you take the time" ..... if YOU take the time to be a bit more respectful to subscribers when replying to their posts perhaps you wouldnt come across as such a condescending individual, how dare you deem to concur what I have/havent read.

If you look at the differing attitudes amongst publishers you can't help but wonder if certain publishers who have previously promised free digital copies to paper subscribers are regretting doing so and wishing they never had, perhaps certain people at the top are starting to discard fairness and promises made for the lure of a few extra quid. Im willing to bet the free digital copies never surface, all the excuses could be nothing more then hoping folks will forget about it all over time.

Nothing disrespectful or condescending about the post from elab. Just informing you that the information you required was in that thread.

A free iPad issue (as well as a paper issue) in my opinion is a bonus not a right. If you are that desperate to read it on the iPad why not subscribe to the iPad version? I subscribe to the paper version and yes, would love to be able to read it on the iPad but for the moment I am happy reading the paper issue.

...as soon as I read your opening words I thought "Another moderator", and indeed you were....its commendable that you support your colleague and Im sure they will return the favour if you should be less then polite in a post and incur a complaint, cosy. as for the digital copy being a perk.....it was YOU LOT that stated that we were going to get it free if we were paper subscribers, you made promises and pushed that proposal and people resubscribed or subscribed on those words so its a bit much your now talking it down and treating it like a bit of fanciful fluff that we shouldnt really care about. Yeah I could subscribe to the digital copy, its an option...one that puts more cash in your pocket and makes YOUR job more secure (no alterior motive there) but why should paper subscribers do so, pointless as you have made a promise to give it free and will do so....that was the promise right, Empire wont go back on that promise Im sure...would you?

As for my being "desperate" to read a digital copy, Im not, but please continue to form conclusions and misinterpret as much as you like.. I am though keen to see Empire honour their word on to all subscribers, does that make me a bad guy?

The reason I suggested the other thread - where this is being discussed - was a member of Empire staff was posting there. If nothing else, you'd be free to aim your bile at the correct target.

Green Moderators are not Empire staff - they're other posters on the site who tidy up abuse, spam and try to aim people at the information they claim they are seeking. We have no vested interest in anything to do with Empire. We just try to enforce the rules of behaviour for using the site. So at this point can I suggest you take the opportunity to read those - they can be found in the Empire Online sub-forum.

Isn't it part of the subscription price though? I didn't think they'd added it to the existing subscription with no price differential - which is what Empire are trying to do.

Bile? and suggesting I read rules on behaviour? .... well there we have it folks, reread this whole thread and form your own conclusions. Apparently being unhappy you have subscribed on the basis of a free digital copy with a paper subscription that hasnt appeared and raising the issue is considered "BILE" and worthy of making smug, self-satisfied and wholely incorrect accusations about behaviour (the last refuge for a powermad mod lol).

You may not be Empire staff but you represent them to their customers, suggesting a complaint is "Bile" is beneath the standards Im sure Empire expects from you....will be interesting to hear what their opinion is on the way you have handled this.

Paul - I share your frustration and I've been asking for updates since October when it was first promised by Empire. However, and this is the main reason why I think it would be unfair to get too irate at Empire - when I took the out the subscription I did so with the guarantee of a 12 month subscription and a free game...that's it. Obviously the iPad subscription was mooted and was expected to be available in a few weeks but unless it was a guaranteed part of the package then I don't think we can have too much cause for complaint.

I'm unsure why it's as complicated as it is, given that the Telegraph and various other publications do it but my point is the fact that I went ahead with a subscription package as outlined above and that's exactly what I received, nothing more, nothing less. The iPad version was always going to be a bonus.

I'm not a moderator or on Empire's payroll. I'm a print subscriber and would love to have the iPad version for free. I've posted on the Subscriptions thread a fair bit and share a lot of subscribers frustrations with the continued delay.

I don't think it's a conspiracy. I don't believe that Empire (and James in particular) are stringing us along with trumped up excuses, because frankly that would be ridiculous. It's a freebie, a perk and would be a very generous one at that to give the iPad edition (which requires a lot of dev work and is not merely a copy and paste job) free to print subscribers. If they've changed their minds they're well in their rights to say "sorry, we tried but it's not going to happen".

James has kept us up-to-date every step of the way and has vented his frustrations along with the rest of us. However, it is your right to be annoyed, angry etc and I guess to vent on here. You've not said anything that breaks forum rules so I suppose you're well in your rights to do so (just as the moderators are well in their rights to consider it "bile"). I suppose that if you're really not happy with Empire, unsubscribing is always an option for you.

We might as well consider the free digital copy assurance dead and buried. It wont happen and poor Empire will just have to deal with all that extra cash from digital copies when the climb down is announced, the sooner the better or do they stilll intend to let it drag on with vague promises they dont intend to honour to lure more paper subscribers in who are gullible enough to believe they will get digital also.

Anyway, we are in agreement about always having the choice not to resubscribe ..... must admit I was a little bit in 2 minds about it but the BILE comment was the final straw.

Empire staff can be contacted via the PM or E-mail function under their user name. As I mentioned, James, e.g., can be found in the thread link above.

Bile. Definition.

quote:

1. (Life Sciences & Allied Applications / Physiology) a bitter greenish to golden brown alkaline fluid secreted by the liver and stored in the gall bladder. It is discharged during digestion into the duodenum, where it aids the emulsification and absorption of fats
2. irritability or peevishness
3. (Psychology) Archaic either of two bodily humours, one of which (black bile) was thought to cause melancholy and the other (yellow bile) anger

Seems about right to me.

I think Paul is coming in for some unfair criticism here tbh. Empire did promise it, and how do you know he didn't subscribe on that basis? Just cause someone else subscribed for a free game and were happy with that, it doesn't mean that he had the same motivations! I've been on the receiving end of some dodgy Empire subscription deals in the past where I was promised things that weren't delivered - so I know that the subscriptions department are capable of misleading customers, It's why I cancelled my print subscription.

It was promised, other companies and magazines do it, is it unfair of us to expect them to honour their promise?

I don't think there is any issue with that question or, indeed, your calm way of asking it. The simple asking of the question would not be any cause for criticism. And I don't disagree with you - I cancelled my Empire subscription when I got the papers through that indicated my subscription cost - as a long term subscriber - was significantly higher than that of the price being used to attract new subscribers. And while I can understand the need to tempt new faces through the door I don't think you do it by ignoring the existing subscriber base, not without some kind of acknowledgement of loyalty.

But there are ways of saying that, aren't there?

And the original post was to direct the questioner to the thread where the issue was being discussed and some answers had been given.

That's it for me too. Probably for Matty's wow post as well. People have the right to complain, but the attitude in Paulypoos' post is fairly unpleasant, and it's being aimed at someone who tried to help him by pointing him in a direction he could find some answers to his query. He seems to have been greatly offended at the suggestion he hadn't read that thread, but if he had, why not post there where he might have got a response from someone in charge? The attitude in this thread reminds me of the people who phone up a company and scream at the receptionists because the big bosses did something wrong. Not very fair or very nice.
