Explanation of why the UK release is missing the commentary

Apparently the production was started earlier so the commentary wasn't done in time. I smell bullshit, but as the same article includes confirmation of the US disc being region free, I'll just import that one.

Anyone else get the feeling there's another version out there just waiting for people to buy this one before we get hit with the sp/edition or Directors Cut?
It also surprises me that the biggest film of the year comes out in September with what seem to be just average extras.

BTW they have denied that there will be another release in the UK down the line.... but then they also denied that the version on blu ray is different from the version shown in cinemas so.....

I haven't bought it yet, not sure whether I should given the 'issues' and the possibility of a re-release/special edtion and all that, but was looking at in my local supermarket today and I have one simple question. If Disney are distributing this movie in the UK, why the hell is Paramount Pictures all over the box?

It's part of a deal between Paramount and Disney wherein this and the upcoming Iron Man 3 will have the Paramount logo on them, as they were greenlit before Disney bought Marvel.

You're welcome. Yes that's the one, Assembling the Team. Although | have to say i've not heard good things about it as it's basically 15 min segments on all the Marvel phase one movies leading up to and including The Avengers. rather than a 90 min doc all about the making of The Avengers (which i think a lot of us would have preffered). Apparently a lot of the interviews are ones taken from the existing releases of the Phase one movies, so if you any/ all of those you;ve probably seen/ heard a lot of the stuff already. Just to give you a heads up!

Would second these comments. The documentary is an interesting watch for someone totally new to the Marvel films, but there's a serious lack of insights and depth overall for those already in the know. By contrast, and just because it's fresh in my memory, there's a documentary on the Hunger Games DVD / BD called 'The World Is Watching'. It's nearly 2hrs long and is staggeringly comprehensive, delving into all aspects of the film and with considerable contributions from all important people. Avengers deserved something like this, rather than an entertaining but pretty superficial overview.

It doesnt have the extras disc for Iron Man or Iron Man 2. It has the rest tho.

Target are one of the major US retailers. With big releases like Avengers and the Twilight films, they tend to offer versions with additional special features that are slightly different from others. (Over there, the likes of Barnes & Noble and Wal-Mart have also been known to do the same, meaning that honest completists end up having to buy multiple versions of the same film. Dishonest / pragmatic completists just head online instead, but that's another story...) Sadly it seems that the UK is headed that way, with Sainsburys often getting unique special features - Avengers and Hunger Games both have extras not found elsewhere, for example. (Sorry to go further OT, but to demonstrate the nonsensical nature of this, Asda do this as well sometimes. Their Deathly Hallows Pt 1 came with an additional disc, and one of the Twilight films had extra features.)

As for your steelbook, did you buy it online or in a shop? In any case, because it's obviously been opened, I'd be surprised if HMV would take it back unless it's flawed or unplayable in some way. I don't want this to sound facetious or dismissive, but if your reason for return is simply because you don't like it, then (unless the Sale of Goods Act or statutory rights allow this) I can't see that being justifiable.

I had pre-ordered the Phase One boxset which has obviously been delayed and took Amazon up on their offer of a free Blu-ray (mainly for the commentary and to not have stupid 'Assemble' after it). But the 90-minute documentary...where do I stand with that? In the US, is it ONLY on the Target edition? Just like it's only on the Sainsbury's edition here? That's the impression I'm getting. And then, from what you've all said about the documentary itself, I don't know if it's even worth buying the Sainsbury's one for it if it will be in the (eventual) Tesseract boxset.

Such a nightmare...

Well apparently the documentary has already surfaced online, and whilst i'm certainly not condoning obtaining it via illegal means, it's out there!

Originally i had on pre-order the 3D release, the HMV steelbook and the Sainsburys exclusive. When word started coming in about the doc on the Sainsburys exclusive not being that great and juust recycling a lot of material from the previous Phase 1 releases, i decided it wasnt worth buying another version just for the doco, so i cancelled the Sainsburys order. Then i decided that seeing as i didnt have any of the other Phase 1 movies on steelbook, The Avengers would stick out a bit, plus i'm not really that crazy about the (IMO) rather dull artwork on it. So i only have the 3D release, which for my money is the best out of the UK ones as at least you do get two different versions of the movie (although both missing a spear tip lol). The only thing i'm really bothered about not having is the commentary as i tend to like listening to those.

The one in your link does indeed appear to mention the Assembling the Team doc, but i believe that is not the same one as the 90 min doc that target has. I know for a fact that ONLY Target has the 90 min doc. I think the one in the Amazon link is a much shorter featurette. If you're feeling brave i can refer you to this thread: http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=197483 on the bluray.com forums, although there are almost 1500 comments, for further clarification. Unfortunately you will have to trawl through a lot of BS to get absolute confirmation. All i know is that Tagert has the 90 min doc in the US and Sainsburys in the UK, and no other retailer in either of those countries has it.

This whole situation is ridiculous and Disney has really screwed fans over on their biggest movie of the year. It should;ve been a no-brainer to load every release with great extras, but the UK have been given especially short shirft.

I've ordered the Amazon US one (about �23 including delivery apparently) and was wondering about the digital copy myself. Would it not simply be a matter of setting up a US account - if that's even necessary - with iTunes or whoever to download it, then watching it on your device(s)? Region locking of digital content? Welcome to the world of tomorrow!

Either way, I've bought it mainly for the 2D blu ray version, the commentary and even the unedited spear tip (on principle)* so if the digital copy doesn't work for me, so be it. On a related note, I never understood why they include DVDs in double / triple / quadruple play versions: if I wanted a DVD copy I'd have bought that version instead! I guess it was to encourage uptake of BD as a format initially / milk the customer for the super special pack, "Look! You get FOUR whole discs! Pay us money!"

* I will be treating the lack of "Assemble" on the title screen as an additional special feature too.

Too be honest I love them, I use the digital versions on my Ipad, my son uses the DVD on a laptop and we all enjoy the blu-rays on the TV.

I don't think the digital versions are region locked, I think they will work on any itunes acc.

I've just realised what you were referring to when you said about region 1: the blu ray itself. I think one of the links up-thread leads to some site that tested it on their multi-region player, which was able to tell them it was region free. Plus Disney UK have said the US version isn't locked, so it's a safe bet to go with it. They won't have locked one retailer's and not another's, not least because that sounds like an unnecessary expense on their part.

All metadata from the likes of Amazon should be taken with a pinch of salt to be honest - I used to work for a company that supplied DVD / BD / CD / games to one of the UK's supermarkets (and started to branch out into its own website) and I can tell you that a lot of the info would be an educated guess / assumption on the company's part (e.g. Amazon; my former employer) or based on incorrect data (sometimes from an early version of a release schedule) from the supplier that was never updated for whatever reason, and sometimes only picked up by the supplier if a query was raised. I know the former because:

a) we did the same thing, and
b) I'd often check some details for a product using Amazon and then notice that the product itself differed. This often included the number of discs in the box.

(I'm not saying any party was in the wrong here by the way - just that some things fall through the cracks)
