So does the popularity of this book indeed suggest that all women really want is an abusive, threatening individual who treat them as a belonging rather than a person?

Apparently so.

Maybe this is why I'm single, I've been wanting the wrong thing.

Now off you toddle and find the nearest possessive, emotionally and physically abusive man and you will be set for life. I bet that is a comfort.

I'm scared. Reckon I'll just stay single.

I need to stay off Facebook for a while. My sisters constant posting about Mr Grey is causing an irrationaly irate reaction. I should be happy that she's reading something I guess but fucking hell, 50 Shades of Grey .

I'm just surprised that the readers haven't tried to claim responsibility for the wettest July on record

My wife is going to start reading it tonight

I'm wondering if I can counter its effects by picking myself up a Train Spotting Monthly magazine on the way home.

I was on holiday last week and the amount of women readin it by the pool was mental. Some really older women as well.

It's probably the safest, and least embarassing place, for the older women to read it...

I'm assuming it's a real page-turner, as my girlfriend said that she flicked all the way through it...

Terrible joke, I apologise. Though my girlfriend is a proper literature snob and she has read them, said they were shit, but they still gave her some pretty horny ideas, so I can't hate on the books too much.

Thanks to Broadcast for pointing out that Erika Leonard, author (as EL James) of the mega-selling "spankbuster" Fifty Shades of Grey, was once a production manager (PM) in the BBC's entertainment department. Her former colleague Steven D Wright calls the book "a BBC handbook for the 21st century", noting that its plot involves "a young, innocent virgin who is tortured and dominated by an overbearing, all-powerful control freak who communicates by email and insists on 10-page contracts ... Even the protracted negotiations between the submissive and her master are familiar to anyone who has fought over each budget line with a bossy PM. No wonder EL writes so passionately about obeying orders and living by rigid rules. Blame Auntie Beeb, she's the real dominatrix here."

Caught my sister reading this. It is the biggest pile of shit I've ever seen put into literary form.

There is better written fan fiction out there that is more erotic that 50 shades of shit . Twilight, Hunger games... women these days get hooked onto the most profound rubbish.

I would hardly compare it to the Hunger Games. At least that has a plot.

Two of the women I work with are now reading it. I was working with one of them today and her son came in (he works for the same company) and he was going on about how ridiculous the parts he'd seen in his friend's book were, and his mother started going on about how it's really a love story and people don't understand it.

I have a copy of it, because I figured I should read it if I want to actually form an opinion on it, but I haven't been able to bring myself to read it yet.

I wonder what the response to this would be if a bloke wrote it. It would probably be shot down in flames pretty sharpish.

The wife has them and I thought about reading one to offer an opinion based on reading it. Ive decided not too and just think they're shit from what Ive heard and the snippets of dialogue Ive read.

Remember when Twilight became huge and they re-released a bunch of books, including classics like Wuthering Heights, with Twilight style covers?

Yeah, now we've got this.

And here's something to combine to shits with one stone:

On a related note, I don't think this shameless cash-in has been posted yet:

Because what classic novels obviously need is more random badly written sex scenes. I'm sure there are very, very few people who read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and thought "some gratuitous sex would really have improved this book". The excerpts in the article are pretty funny, though.

One of the women at  my work is just back off holiday. She read the first book whilst she was off and said it was terribly written, as though by a ten year old. She also said it wasn't dirty enough...
