 I've noticed a kind of pattern emerging with a lot of my friends on Facebook recently in that they are all raving about some "Fifty Shades of..." books and a certain Mr Grey.

First glance and it looks like a raunchy Mills and Boon which is completely the opposite end of the spectrum for books I like to read but wondered if anyone had read them and what the fuss was all about...

I did try but the writing is dreadful - some self-published thing that hasn't been tidied up enough IMO.

It's gotten the notoriety though - even if it seems like a badly-written attempt to novelise Secretary at times. But given the presumption is the sexual politics will mirror Twilight, why would grown-up women want to read it?

 The books are all runaway bestsellers.

(and notice who's lurking at the top of the hardcover fiction section, you couldn't make it up).

The author was even on Newsnight a couple of weeks ago! First and hopefully last time I'll see a Newsnight presenter talking about fisting...
As the writer of an amateur, knocked together eBook I am slightly jealous - should have gone with porn instead of sci-fi.

 Yeah it seems a lot of my friends are also reading it. It literally started life as Twilight fanfic, I hate the mainstream sometimes...

 I read the first one to review it (I also wrote a piece on the issues behind pulling fan-fiction to publish as original for my blog) and it physically hurt, it was just that awful. I'm still in shock that a Twilight fan-fiction's sold millions and nobody in the publishing industry seems to have an issue with the possible ethics and copyright issues this presents. I am all for anything that encourages conservative middle America to get its freak on, but these books read like they were written by a 14 year old girl who has no idea how sex actually works. I suggest watching this dramatic reading of the infamous tampon scene to understand why it's so hilariously yet painfully bad.

 I knew Amelie would be present on this thread. I've not read them myself mainly because of Amelie's hatred of them and reading many of her reviews and rants against them. I can''t believe how many of my female friends are madly in love with Mr Grey.

I've read excerpts and it comes across more as an abusive relationship than a true BDSM one.

I talk with a lot of romance and erotica readers and writers and not one of them thinks this book is anything less than pure shit. However, I do find it fascinating how indicative its success is of the change in publishing and the literary market. It sold more e-books than anything else before being picked up by Vintage and now the NYT best-seller list is filling up with self published work. The traditional publishing markets are freaking out and trying to keep up, hence the 7 figure deal this series got.

I primarily write about young adult literature but here's the piece I wrote on the series and it's place in publishing, aqnd here's my review. No, I don't know why I did the review like that either.

 I've picked up on that from your posts on Twitter and Goodreads that she has no clue what she was writing about. I read *ahem* some erotica and when written well can be brilliant and this doesn't sound anything near that level. Again you've solidified my reasons for not wanting to read it.

 My missus is on the third book. she seems to like it. Do I detect some highbrow snobbery from some folk regarding it, like Dan Brown and Da Vinci Code? Or is it really that bad? Just reading the blurb on the back made me think it's just glorified lady porn but each to their own. It has obviously found its market, rather spectacularly

No snobbery on my part if I'm going to read a dirty book I want it to be titillating and know what it's talking about. Not a housewives sex fantasy with no real understanding as to what makes up a true and healthy BDSM relationship.

No good and skilled top/dominate would have to force a bottom/submissive into doing anything they genuinely didn't want to do. If a submissive says NO!!!! it means no. I know there is a scene where the male turns up in a bar when the female is drinking he knows where she is because his activated a tracker on her phone. That is not BDSM that is creepy and stalkerish.

Yes it is lady porn but there is so much better stuff out there than this. "The story of O" springs to mind.

No, it's genuinely that bad. I have no issue with a trashy read now and then. Dan Brown can't write to save himself but he's a not bad story-teller and his work is readable. I read a lot of romance and teen novels and if you dig through the rubbish there are some really brilliant reads. Romance gets a bad rap because of stuff like 50 Shades. In reality, it's very hard to pull off writing a genuinely great romance novel, as it is in writing a good genre piece. 50 Shades is just bad. It's terribly written, full of plodding pacing, terrible characterisation, painfully cringe-worthy dialogue, sex scenes that read like they were written by a 14 year old virgin and the misrepresentation of BDSM relationships. It's fan-fiction! It's Bella and Edward pornographic fan-fiction with the serial numbers shaved off! If you google "Master of the Universe PDF" you can find it in its original form easily. I suggest doing that instead of paying good money. If you want good romance novels, check out the work of Julie James and Victoria Dahl.

Having a quick shifty at my other halfs Facebook (he's in his thirties) all of his female friends seem to be writing in some sort of code. 'Just finished Book Three! Oh how I miss Mr Grey' 'And now onto Book Two! Can't get enough of Mr Grey'.

It sounds awful. I read a few lines of the first book and much like Twilight I was instantly put off.

 I'm the same all my friends are reading it too and I was told you must go and buy it so my first thought having no idea about it, was " oh it will be good to all be a reading a book together"
Took me about 3 days to get to chapter 8 with alot of eye rolling and thinking this is so stupid maybe it will get better .. ermm no it's got worse so I've abandoned it and will probs put it in the charity bin.
The friend who told me to get it I am seeing later I know she's going to ask me about it and I'm going to be branded as a book snob I know.
They tell me I'm a film snob too so it shouldn't be a surprise

My Mum had read the hype and asked me what I knew about the books, explaining to my Mum the plot synopsis was fun.

I think that nails it really. It's getting off on the actual reading rather than caring the books are pretty shit.

 I'm curious, do the books actually have a plot? The blurb is pretty vague and all I've heard people talk about is the two main characters and the sex scenes.

Just had another look at his Facebook. The general conversation seems to have shifted to the film(!) With one of our friends commenting that she heard it was going to be Ryan Gosling and Emma Roberts(?!) I would love to see Ryan Goslings face when he's offered with this role.

Read some of the first book for a laugh and laugh I did, at great length. It's hilariously bad, but even that wears thin after a while.

Was having my hair cut yesterday and the hairdresser mentioned that she and her friends were all reading it and how fabulous it was etc. I tried to politely offer my opinion but the words "Twilight Fan Fiction Shite" may have crept out. She got quite pissy with me.

Don't piss off a woman when she's holding scissors near your head people!

I got it on Saturday night when my friends were round for a drink before a night out. She mentioned that she was reading it and how it was so so good and I had to read it because it was just so amazing. I said to her I'd heard it was crap and that it started life as Twilight fan fiction and she looked at me blankly. I had to explain to her what fan fiction is.

Not really. I haven't read the other two (I'm a literary masochist but even I have limits) but the basic gist is "Boy meets girl, boy wants to beat the shit out of girl and pass it off as kinky, sex, sex, break up, I-can-change-you soppy crap, sex, sex sex sex, pregnancy, happy ever after." Or something along those lines. I'm not sure how obvious this is to people who aren't familiar with fan-fiction but the books read like fic so much in terms of pacing. It reads like it was serialised on a chapter-by-chapter basis, as it was when it was first written.

The movie stuff is just mind-boggling. Considering how pearl-clutching the MPAA got at Blue Valentine, there's no way they could make this movie as anything less than an NC-17, even though it is way more vanilla than it thinks it is. The sales figures are also so depressing. I yearn for the days when all I had to complain about was Twilight.

 It sounds like that episode of south park where the boys write that book "The tale of Scrotie McBoggerballs" and it becomes a number one best seller.
