I wouldn't call The Hobbit a prequel because... well, it came first. (I wouldn't personally call Prometheus a prequel either, but I suppose that's more a case of personal opinion.) Based on that, I'm not sure how comparable the two are. People already know The Hobbit, so there won't be any discussion on whether it lives up to LOTR story-wise (at least, no discussion that hasn't already been going on for quite a while!) Prometheus, on the other hand, was an unknown quantity: early reviews suggested it could be seen as a prequel to Alien if you felt like it, so naturally the world expected another Alien. When expectations are that high (especially when the plot is unknown to the audience), a film has a lot further to fall. I expect The Hobbit will do pretty well. I'm sure there will be plenty of people who don't like it/think it isn't as good at LOTR, but personally I don't forsee very much controversy. The story is well known, and the production team is proven - unless they've made any very odd (and secret) decisions, I think The Hobbit is a pretty safe bet to do well.
