If you download the trial version of PhotoShop, it comes with that.

Hmmm, I've never had this.  The only thing I can think of is, how long is the section you are backing up?  If it's too long that might cause the problem.

i think ive figured it out i deleted all the crappy McAfee programmes and that seems to have allowed me to rip the footage i want however once it has been rip its saved as a file that wont then play! lol

one problem after another i think i mite have missed something during the Backup section is there some way i can ensure it gets saved as i dunno windows media file or something like that??

You need to download VirtualDub to play the footage, it wouldn't be any fun if it was easy!   Make sure you get the one with MPEG-4...something.

Wow, I didn't realise my thread got stickied, I'm proud . I've given up on the av-making (thanks to programs expiring, and uni), but I hope all the basics from all the wizards will give everyone else will help !

Harrumph, I tried to make an av from Casino Royale this evening, and DVD Shrink gave me a bizarre error message:  "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)".  Anyone else had this, or know a way around it?

EDIT: As you may have noticed, I have sorted it out.

 I use good ol' Animation Shop 3, Cyberlink Powerdvd and Paintshop Pro 7 to make my animated gifs.
I do congratulate those who make the xmassy avatars at Christmas, with the candy canes, santa hats and snow, as I sure couldn't do that.
Do you use paintshop to do it, as i reckon that would take ages to do.

Managed to rip a clip using DVD Shrink but I'm not to sure how to use Virtual-Dub MPEG2 step by step and what to do after that. Any pointers? I have VLC player so I can view the clip in that (.vob format).

To cut the clip down:
File->Open Video File
Move the slider to the beginning of the bit you want, click the mark out button (last one along the bottom)
Edit->Cut
Now move the slider to the end of the section you want, click the mark in button. Move slider to the end of the vob, click mark out
Edit->Cut
Now you should have just the frames you want for the gif.

Optionally, reduce the size of the images:
File-> File Information. Jot down the Frame size (probably something like 720x480)
Video->Filters->Add->Resize->Ok
Enter new width and height, make the largest side 100, divide other side by same factor so it doesnt squish eg/ 100 66.6.
Filter mode = Precise Bilinear. Click OK

File->Save Image Sequence
Minimum number of digits = 4
Choose an empty directory to hold images
Output Format = BMP
Click OK, Virtualdub spits the images out

Then you import the images into your animation program

 grab a photo off the net, resize/crop in photoshop 7, possibly adding a border of other effects - but im more of a minimal man myself.

Yea. Say you've got 2 pictures, so 2 layers. Duplicate the first frame a few times, make sure both layers are visible then lower the opacity of the top layer incrementally on each frame. Slightly tedious.

Any clues as to how I can go about doing this?

Create a Photoshop-File with two (or more) layers: one Layer for each pic. Open the file in ImageReady. ImageReady has a ready-to-use tween button in the animation window (the one after the select next frame button).
  • Select a frame in the animation frame window (the layer with the first pic visible)
  • Click the tween button (the button after the "select next frame" button).
  • Add the desired amount of frames (e.g. 3 or 4) between the selected frame and the following frame (Layer with visible second pic).
  • Choose the tween parameter. In your case: opacity which automatically changes the opacity of the new frames (between the chosen frame and the desired ending frame).

Open the file in ImageReady.  It will open it as a set of frames, so the bigger the file the more frames there will be and the longer it will take to open.  Delete the frames you don't want, reduce the image size to 100x100 pixels, then use the optimise window to convert to a .gif as described a few posts up.

 I've been up all night trying to figure out the avatar mularky, i got all the basics down and came up with this   just something nice and simple, but when i upload it here it goes a bit wonky because of the change from 100x80 to 100x100, any suggestions? by the way thanks to everyone for the help, always nice to learn something new even if it does keep me up til 5:15 in the morning!

I had the adobe photoshop trial, which ran out then downloaded the gif movie gear trial, they both work for 30 days fully then switch off, that should keep you going for two months

It's very very large for this forum so it is taking a while to load up I think the limit is 150kb yours is over 900Kb. It has shown up in the end

LOL yeah as long as you add the image to your pictures folder and then upload it to photo bucket I haven’t got a complaint against that issue.

What tactics do you use what kind of bait do you use I use “star wars gif” and go fishing around found some good ones I have.

Hi all

I'm very new to this av malarkey and have downloaded DVD shrink and Virtual Dub. I've managed to extract the clip I want on DVD shrink and have "backed it up"...whatever that means but when I try to open it on virtualdub I can't find it anywhere in my folders etc. There are icons of the folder and the titles I saved it under but it just keeps saying 'no items match your search'...

Can someone help me out please and tell me just how far from 'right' I am?? Thanks all.

Hi!!
Need some av advise!! Or related-ish!

I downloaded DVD Shrink, extracted my clip, then turned it into an avi file using Virtual Dub which when I first opened it thought WTF!! But managed to do that bit at least, the rest, not a clue! I want to make a montage of clips with music via Windows Movie Maker but when I play the clips I've extracted they are really slow and jumpy.
Any thoughts?? Is there any other software I can use?

BTW, I got the tips from this thread so to whoever it was who posted the "how to use DVD Shrink info" you're a star
