 YAY!  At last.  I finally got it all to work, even in spite of my Animation Shop software which was giving me more grief than all the other things put together. It didn't like me trying to resize a 378Mb file but I persevered and won!   Mind you, the av that I've made is still probably too big to have on here (459kb) but it was worth doing it just for the knowledge and experience.

Thanks again to Mononoke for all the help.  It was much appreciated.

 Hey, you helped enormously!  There's no way in hell that I would've figured out how to use DVD Shrink and Virtualdub without your help.  I'd've been floundering like a salmon in a puddle.   And yep, the av's my first effort made from scratch.  I also made a Tom & Jerry one last night but I'm keeping that for a rainy day.

 I hope someone can help.
When I try to make avs, the picture quality turns out to be quite bad. It looks like when you enlarge a photo and isn't as clear anymore as it should be.
I'm using Dvd shrink, Virtual dub and GIF movie gear. Does anybody know how to get a clear picture? Any help is really appreciated.
(Hope this makes sense.)

 Cull some frames maybe?  It's quite slow so if you removed every 3rd frame (just for example) and speeded up the frame rate, it might run better? Just an idea.

I did what you suggested and lost about 150 colours or so. I changed the frame rate from 5/100ths of a second to 3/100ths, too.

 The 2nd version is a bit smoother than the 3rd but in all honestly, it's pretty minimal.  They're both good.

I love the subject matter btw.

 Are any of you speaking English? I am so impressed that you all can do these amazing things with your computers. I found out how to put a picture up, but that is the sum total of my knowledge. I get really scared that I'm going to do something awful to my computer or the program, that I rarely go on any sites that I don't know. One time, the site that I accessed corrupted some stuff and I didn't know how to correct it. I had to get my mate to assist.

Just tried to download some smilies from a site, cacked my kecks and withdrew to my corner. I think I'm going to have to get my friend to show me the moves. I'm soooo poo.

Hey everyone, I finally made my first GIF last nite- so thanks for all the advice in this thread!

I used DVD shrink to cut the few seconds of the scene I needed, then VirtualDub to get the JPEG frames and finally Easy Gif Animator to create the avatar.

The only problem was that, when I shrunk the frames to create the GIF- the final colours were very blotchy/patchy- is their anyway to get around this?

Also, I am now trying to create one from a 24 season 5 episode I downloaded. But because I am not using DVD Shrink, can I use VirtualDub to capture just the frames I need? How can I do this easily?

Should be a doddle Tyler, just open the avi in Virtual Dub, then there's two buttons that allow you to mark the start and end of the video sequence you want. On my version of the software (1.6.11) they are the two on the far right. Click the first and it will put a marker down on the timeline. Move to the end of the sequence you want, click the second and it should colour a part of the timeline in. Then go file -> save image sequence and choose the folder and save as jpegs.

Failing that, give me the timing for the episode and I'll make it for you.

Make sure it's not spoilerific material  from 24 though, otherwise some people not at download speed may be after you, mate! 

Now my Virtual Dub question: can you specify to skip frames when outputting the video to still images? I'm certain there's a way I've just not found the setting and it means I have to go and manually delete some frames to load them into imageready more smoothly, which is a bit of a pain.

I use Easy Gif Animator as well and I've found that happens when you go to make the image size smaller so I use Macromedia Fireworks instead.

I think Messenger 7.5 supports animated display pictures, not entirely sure until I get home and test it. If that doesn't 8 definately will.

I think you can.  If you select 'video' and then 'frame rate' you get the 'video frame rate control' dialog box and you should then be able to specify the required frames in the 'frame rate convertion' option.

Its also good to add a resize filter in Virtualdub so the frames don't take an age to load in ImageReady

Yes there is.  In ImageReady, when you optimise to GIF, there will be a little arrow in that box.  Click on it and it will bring up a menu, where you will find the option to optimise to size.

hey tech gods! ive downloaded DVD Shrink and followed the instructions posted above however when i get to choosing the start anf finish points that all works fine, then i click Backup and create a new folder in the correct place then i click ok and it begins this thing that says Encoding however it stops immediately completely freezes and i have to restart my computer,

Can anyone help please!!
