Afraid that only a very small percentage of the films so far mentioned in the thread would even make my top 100, let alone top 10. And with a whole century of films to choose from, why do so many of these lists never feature any films earlier than 1980?

Well the list is favourite films not the greatest films so people go for films which entertain them the most, the 80's contained a lot of films which were very good at entertainment and fun.

Agreed, and I love a lot of films from that decade, but I'd still argue that there are just as many from other, earlier decades which are every bit as good. And I'm not talking about cinematic masterpieces, but just films which are terrific entertainment.

I guess the ones from the 80's speak to people more. Most peoples favourite films were made around the time they were growing up. Quite a few of the board members on here range from mid-teens to people in their 30's and 40's. All of whom would have experienced 80's films at a young age, either by seeing them at the cinema when they were first released or catching them on tv when they were very young.

1. Avengers Assemble
2. Lord of the Rings Return of the King
3. Source Code
4. Hot Fuzz
5. Terminator Judgement Day
6. The Dark Knight
7. Star Trek
8. Daredevil
9. Fox and the Hound
10. Hangover

There are a few controversial choices, but going on pure enjoyment factor, quality characters, memorable moments and scenes of legend, I think this is a good solid ten.

Honorable mention to arachnophobia, Die hard with a vengeance, 300, Predator and Basil the great mouse detective.

Far more feature-length films were being produced in the 1980s than in the 1910s so that's a little unfair

Do please explain what's unfair about it.
You've completely misunderstood the point that I'm trying to make, which is that there were many excellent films made before the 1980's, and frankly I don't think that you can call yourself a true lover of film if you're going to virtually ignore more than half a century of films and limit yourself to just the last 20 - 30 years.

Now, of course, my top ten rarely stays the same (apart from the top spot; I don't see that changing, ever) but here it goes...

1. Jaws
I could go on forever.

2. Once Upon A Time In The West
Second to none in terms of capturing the feeling of a myth.

3. Sunset Boulevard
Just absolute heaven from beginning to end.

4. Pulp Fiction
No matter how many times I watch it, it's still so damn fresh.

5. There Will Be Blood
Another case where words fail me...just a cinematic miracle...

6. Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid
So good that the morning after I'd seen it, I thought I'd dreamt it...

7. Se7en (number placing is purely coincidence, I promise)
...whereas this is the ultimate cinematic nightmare.

8. The Third Man
For Harry Lime's entrance alone.

9. Unforgiven
It feels like the perfect end to the west, and its genre.

10. Chinatown
Genius...'nuff said.

...hmm, I guess it's obvious that westerns and film noir are my favourite genres.

Not really.

The US produced over 5,000 feature films (not including short, which far outnumbered features) in the 1910s and the vast majority of those came in the period of 1915-20, following Birth of a Nation.

1917 saw the greatest amount of films being made annually which was over 900.

The 1980s saw just over 7,000 films being produced which is an average of 700 per year.

If you include shorts the silent era was the most prolific era of American film making ever.

If you are only counting feature length films than the 30s dwarfs any other decade with almost 10,000 films being produced by Hollywood studios.

If not for WWII the 40s would have towered above even the 30s as close to 8000 films were being produced despite a cut back in production due to the war.
