Aside from my own, Romania looks pretty strong (although they are both from the same director).

4 Months, 3 Weeks, & 2 Days was directed by Cristian Mungiu

The Death of Mr Lazarescu was directed by Cristi Puiu.

That's a couple that have spoken highly of Romania's entries.

And elab questioned whether I was serious with my choice...!

Fair point.

Don't know why I thought they were by the same person (same studio/producers perhaps?) In fairness, they're not remarkably dissimilar from one another. They are for example both quite damning of Romanian health care - in their different ways obviously.

So in the the grand tradition of Eurovision, who's going to be doing the chummy mutual 12 point back slap? Or do we not have to worry about it seeing as nobody had Greece or Cyprus.

Well, if previous Eurovisions are anything to go by, I should get voted for by the UK, then not vote for them. Though as the UK in this scenario is Gimli, anything could happen.

Gimli's taste in films is a bit like the Russian grannies from this year, fuck-awful but you can't help but love/pity it.

Same country?

That's true, tho. Very different ways. I'm not sure 4 Months... could ever be considered a black comedy. It's wonderfully grim.

It's up there with Rosemary's Baby, Alien and arguably Prometheus now, in the list of Films To Watch When Pregnant...

To be fair to him (I assume Gimli is a he, but who knows), he has nominated Wallace and Gromit which is a masterpiece. So he isn't a lost cause.

There's also that early episode of ER - which might have helped me to a decision that I really really really didn't want kids.

Just watched for the first time, ' A Cottage on Dartmoore'. Excellent stuff. Great story and some stunning filming, especially in the first half of the film. Wasn't a massive fan of some points in the ending, but the acting of the main male lead, and as i said, the cinematography also, was amazing. Good choice Gimli

I've got Secret of Kells and In a Better World winging their way over to me from Lovefilm so I can hopefully get started on my Eurovision viewing this week. There's about 6 or 7 of the films available on Lovefilm's streaming service as well which is handy. In fact the only one of the films I've not been able to source, that I don't own, is The Return.

At a guess their copy must have gone AWOL - the pic Lovefilm are showing is of the existing release which may now be OOP - it's on Amazon but fulfilled for someone else.

That means three options I think,

- we didn't discuss it here but you may occasionally need to buy a film for HoF, although there are limits in any round as to how much people might need to shell out. You can get it for under £3 from Amazon new.

- these two youtube links seem OK (second one is the whole film)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B4itd4XKko&list=UUy25ynt3u-8DAPoVT7WRc7g&index=6&feature=plcp
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnDvz8SjGBw

- or I could loan a copy.

You, the Living - I really, really liked this. The music was fantastic, the opening was hilarious and the dream about the marriage to the musican was gorgeous. Great film - one I'm going to be thinking about for a long time.

Whether by chance, fate, design or simply the fact that they're the only two I've added to Lovefilm as of yet, the two Danish entries are currently winging their way to me. I hope Sadface has picked two winners.

I think the Danes wouldn't be too chuffed if you pitched up assuming they spoke German

I really meant to watch Festen at the weekend but my husband was not a happy bunny about it so we ended up watching Adam's Apples (which I'd probably have nominated if I'd taken Denmark and people could actually get it in the UK). He wasn't strictly speaking entirely happy after that either!

The one thing I'd say about the Italian films is that I do love that poster for Dolce Vita. It's on the cover of a book I've got on Italian cinema as well, so that stays near the front of the bookcase.

I managed to watch Secret of Kells over the weekend. I've also downloaded In A Better World off the Sky Anytime+ service so I could send the blu-ray back to Lovefilm. Hopefully I'll have another couple of Eurovision entries winging their way to me tomorrow.

Secret of Kells was great, it's one of the best looking animated films I've seen in a while, certainly from a Western studio anyway.
