It's almost done. Just doing final checks. I'd say give it an hour or so.

It'll take about an hour or so, will it? Well, here we are 3 hours later, and nothing.

I wish I could say that this was a rare occurrence, but it's basically every month that there's some kind of problem that sees the iPad issue arriving later than planned. If we even get it on the day of release it's a pleasant surprise. My work colleague's had his print edition since Monday, and that's fine by me, but I would actually like to get the iPad edition on the day it's supposed to come out once in a while.

You must acknowledge, James, that this monthly wrangling with the issue doesn't put Empire in a good light. That's before we look at the rumbling issue of joint print/ipad subscriptions, the app failing to recognise you've bought a subscription, or failing to recognise your past purchases, so you can spend the day deleting the app and reinstalling it in the vain hope that it might work. Automatic downloads in the background don't work either, unlike most other reputable newsstand publications (The Guardian, for example); that last point is hardly a deal-breaker, but it'd really be helpful, and I'd expect a magazine at the supposed cutting-edge to have thought of it and implemented it by now.

As a side note, you're now looking at serious competition as regards iPad versions of movie mags, as Total Film have sensibly relaunched their iPad edition as an interactive version, instead of their previous PDF style scan approach. As far as I can see, their editions are out on time and working. There are some complaints about download speed, but if they can beat that, then Empire's monthly release date kerfuffle is going to look even more embarrassing than it normally does.

Anyway, Whose fault is it this month? Adobe's again?

I signed up last month for a year's subscription, as well! I must need my fucking head read. I'm yea close <indicates small distance between thumb and index finger> to asking for a refund, to be honest, because I basically no longer have any faith in you to deliver the bloody magazine at a sensible time on the day of release - assuming that we get it on the day of release at all.

What are Empire actually doing to sort this out, other than rolling their eyes and saying "Tsk, that Adobe eh? What a bunch of wags"?

EDIT: It's just appeared on Newsstand, so appraently "an hour or so" Empire-time is equivalent to 3 and a half hours normal time. Thanks for getting it out on release day, then.

I didn't renew my subscription when it lapsed last week and have bought Empire since the first issue. I think James does a brilliant job of keeping is informed but the iPsd edition is stunningly incompletely handled. I have bought my first ever issue of Total Film this month and will compare the two. I suspect that Empire will still win out in terms of content and be the one I stick with but the fact that I'm even contemplating ditching it after all these years is telling I think.

I'm only one subscriber of course - but I was loyal.

Oh and I have five magazines, none of which I currently subscribe to, in Newsstand. Empire is the only one that NEVER bothers to tell me there's a new issue.

Just wanted to say how pleased I was with this month's edition. I live in Japan so I'm not really aware of what actual day it hits the shops back home.

Anyway, this month's edition appeared quickly, with a notification and had already downloaded by the time I opened newsstand.

This is a complete turnaround after last month's messy delivery (which was really down to Adobe).

Thanks again.

I can confidently say that the delay on this issue (which was half a day!) had nothing whatsoever to do with Adobe. It was mainly the US edition combined with redesigning the entire issue to reflect the new look of the magazine.

We do the best we can with the resources we have (and the technology). It's unfortunate some users feel the need to be vent their frustration in such impolite terms, but I do sympathise with their frustration. We were here till 4am getting the thing finished (UK and US) so it's not for lack of dedication that the on-sale time slips but this issue certainly was a bugger. The iPad 3 means we now do two version of each issue (one for each resolution), with the US that's four, add in the Horizontal and verticals and you have a whole lot of stuff going on. Still, it was only the new launch and the redesign that did us in this month and I'm hopeful that next issue will go a lot smoother.

Is this aimed at me, or Cockeye, or both of us? I ask as I've looked at both our posts again and can't see anything impolite in them, unless stating facts has now been deemed impolite by the International Etiquette Board.

Still, it's nice to hear that you sympathise with us. You must understand that this is not an ad hominem attack on you, but a by-product of the lack of reliability around release dates that has dogged the iPad issue pretty much every month.

If we actually get a few months in a row where the magazine comes out on release day, at a sensible time, without adverse incident, then these gripes will disappear, I'm sure. Until then, though...

Also, are we ever going notification that the mag is ready to download? Whilst not essential it really is useful, and you guys are the only publication I've seen who don't do it.

Hmmm - sorry if you feel we have been impolite James, I didn't mean anything I said to be taken that way. However, at the same time you do need to remember we are paying customers - and we don't experience the same problems with other publications. hell - even the free Sport magazine downloads without fail every Friday.

But this is not an attack on you,
