 I'm up for this. I could do UK, France, Germany, Denmark and then maybe Sweden, Spain, Norway and Greece.

But I don't really mind what I get.

Also, what's the stance on films that are from a particular country but are in English (seeing as that's something that happens in Eurovision)?

That would fit perfectly but it would have to be a film from that country eg a Hollywood film filmed there wouldn't count because even though Eurovision does use non-country singers the song does 'belong' to them.

Are there any particular films you were thinking of? (Just an example, not one you'd be locked in to!)

 I have a feel for the contest. Various European countries put on a stage show so camp it makes a Graham Norton wet dream appear butch. They also sing, often badly, while desperately trying to avoid winning because nobody can afford to host the show anymore. Whichever country does host next year will have an act consisting of poverty stricken people holding up signs reading "Will Sing For Food." They'll also declare war on every country who gave them higher than nil points. Basically, the tipping point for the next World War won't be the financial crisis itself, it'll be the pressure of hosting Eurovision. The next dictator will be a flamboyant man with a fondness for Bucks Fizz.

The first 2.5 sentences are the standard cliche - there are always some, but far fewer 'shows' nowadays (to the contests detriment IMO - Babydoll has to be seen to be believed). You also get some damn good singers amongst the dross.

The desperation not to win, however, is noteworthy in many corners. Pity Russia's - the most blatant - might backfire. And Spain probably shouldn't have submitted their best entry for ages if they wanted to avoid it.

Greece were kak and shouldn't be in the final but I wonder if it's a bunch of pissed off Europeans taking revenge - mind you, I thought that vote would have gone to Germany.

Also - Moldova does do a kind of simulated sex act on stage with the oddest placed fanny pack (or the weirdest genitals) I've seen for a while.

 it is hideously bad. The camp Wil Wheaton lookalike who opened the show, the really bad songs, the costumes, Matty's harem baking biscuits, it was awful. It confirmed every stereotype I've ever heard about the show.

 There was one Eurovision song, I don't think I've ever heard the original, but it was an Irish winner in the 80s (I think) Anyway, years and years and years ago Eurotrash did a Eurovision special where they had singers cover winners, and Shane MacGowan covered it. Think it was called What's Another Year. I liked his cover.

Were people really surprised Dindlebert Zindledack didn't do well? I've heard mention of anti-UK voting, to me it seemed like anti-shite song voting. It was awful. So dreary, and it seemed to go on forever. I have a kooky idea, why don't Britain pay a good song-writer to come up with their Eurovision entry? They could even put it under a pseudonym if they didn't want their name associated with the competition. I don't watch the contest, but I generally hear our entry at some point, and it seems like we fling any old crap at Europe and then cry about politics when people don't vote for it.

I don’t watch Eurovision (I just make jokes about He Man) but from various online feeds and sources yesterday it seems to bring out a shocking amount of vicious Xenophobia in quite a lot of people. I know it’s sort of sets itself up to be taken the piss out of but wow… I’ve not heard Yangelbert Slaptybacks song and I’m sort of sad I missed the old ladies singing about bread.

Anyway I officially throw my name into the mix for Empire's Film Eurovision.

I quite liked it but I did think that was more of a reflection of a generally poor year. It was well performed, though. But yes - the politics arguments always seem to ignore the song itself, rather than considering all the factors including that one, which is pretty important.

What's ANother Year was Johnny Logan - won two as a singer and one as writer.

We now have 12 confirmed (13 if Paul was a yes?) - I think, with a couple of films each, that's probably our max limit.

Based on what people have said above, taking into account the joiners who asked for one of one or more countries I've assigned countries in order to

And UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Denmark are now gone.

If Homer was serious on Romania it's his. Apart from that could everyone who was happy with any Eurovision country please post or PM their top 3 country prefs and I'll assign them on a first come first served basis. At the moment I'd say it should be a country you're happy to submit two accessible films from for the comp. Once we've got countries sorted we'll go from there.
