So I was watching Saving Private Ryan on film4 last night for the first time in years and I couldn't believe how many cameos there are in the film that I had never noticed on my previous viewing of the film. Although come to think of it, these actors that I noticed probably weren't all that famous the last time I watched it, but of all the cameos in the film Nathan Fillion's jumped out at me playing the wrong Private Ryan they find along their journey.

http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0002094/

Anyway, has anyone else noticed other cameos on a repeat viewing of a film and if so who and what character did they play?

I remember seeing Michael Fassbender in Poirot: main role so doesn't count as a cameo.

Pierce Brosnan first starred in The Long Good Friday didn't he?

Cameos are done by famous people. Those are bit parts.

The Thin Red Line has hundreds of cameos/bit parts. Half of them never made it onto the screen.

Now I don't know much about trends in kids fashions, but I can't see rimless green bowler hats with attachable fly swatter taking off in 3 years

Jack Nicholson in The Little Shop of Horrors.

His face dominating the DVD cover years ago conned me into buying it, only for him to appear for about 60 seconds

(not that I didn't enjoy it, I was just led to believe Nicholson was a big player in it)

Johnny Depp in A Nightmare On Elm Street. Took me a while to notice him in Platoon as well.

Gotta agree with DC, these are bit parts, not cameos.

But then, I'm Dr Pedantic.

I'd say James Carrey in The Dead Pool, Robbie Coltrane and Liam Neeson in Krull, and Arnie in The Long Goodbye.

Both Tobey Maguire and Joseph Gordon-Levitt popped up in Roseanne in the early 90s. Gordon-Levitt was actually pretty funny as DJ's excrutiatingly boring friend, George.

So, basically this is 'before they were famous' but with small prts and not major starring roles? I know of a few

Jake Gyllenhaal played Billy Crystal's son in City Slickers

Forest Whitaker is in Fast Times At Ridgemont High

Stallone's in Woody Allen's film Bananas a few years before he became famous as Rocky

Famously, Laurence Fishburne is in Apocalypse Now

Jesus, err, I mean Jim Caviezel had his first ever movie role in My Own Private Idaho

Bruce Willis is an extra in the courtroom in The Verdict. Watch this clip, he's three rows behind Paul Newman but you'll see him better when the camera closes in on Newman starting at the 1.21 mark- click

John Barrowman is in The Untouchables but you only the back of him (bet some people are glad to see that....huh...huh? Not me, though, I like Barrowman). I can't find a photo, though.

I'm pretty sure that's Tobin Bell of the Saw films in the same row.

The only one that I can think of that hasn't been mentioned is Gerard Butler in Tomorrow Never Dies

In my defense, the definition of a cameo is 'a small part' or 'a single and often brief dramatic scene played by a well-known actor or actress in a film or television play.' The title of my thread would suggest that the cameo is played by a well known actor but in his early career, therefore not that well known at the time of their scene in the movie. So I'm not entirely wrong by the title of my thread.

Well, the row in front of Willis, but yeah, that's him. He was in Tootsie the same year too, apparently
