Er... thanks. However I think it's a valid observation, a lot of people I know dislike him for exactly that. They don't like being condescended to and find his admittedly opinionated act a bit threatening because of that. Whereas somebody like Michael McIntyre is far less intense and offers quite lighthearted entertainment.


Hmm, I don't see what McIntyre has to do with it - just 'cos someone dislikes Stewart Lee's work it doesn't mean they only like lighthearted mainstream stuff.
Louis CK is also opinioniated, intense and hyper-intelligent. But he doesn't need to prove his intelligence by giving off a vibe that the whole idea of stand-up is beneath him and only the select few are sophisticated enough to 'get him'. He does it by being simply hilarious.

That's fair enough. Thing is I can enjoy people like Macintyre and Kay. Maybe they are lighthearted and non-confrontational, I just don't understand Lee's problem with that. I also love stand-up from people like Richard Pryor, Bill Hicks, Gervais, and Louis CK especially, who are anything but lighthearted. There seems to be a lot of silly tribalism about this. Does all comedy have to be intense, opinionated and in-your-face?

Could you not see how maybe that's coming from your dislike of him though, rather than actually being the case? I think if anything his act alienates him from mainstream standup in quite a hilarious way. He almost comes across as a bitter, out of touch and washed out 90s comedian. When he's on stage with a guitar trying to come up with a song whilst mocking other more successful comics, it's almost tragic.. I think that's all part of the act surely?

I don't think he's money for laughs the funniest comedian ever, but I enjoy his act. I know this is all subjective but I do think a lot of people misunderstand his act as quite threatening, when really it isn't in the slightest.

Or maybe you just don't find him funny in the slightest, which is also fair enough!

 I've met Stewart Lee a few times and he's a really nice bloke. I do think his stage persona is mainly himself, but outside of it he's not an intellectual or comedic snob.

And a mate has met Al Murray and said he was a complete twat. Really up himself and totally rude.

Whoever said Dappy, oh god yes so much. His from the same place as me and keeps going on about hard and tough it was, please I know where you lived. Miss Dynamite is also so guilty of doing this. She went to school with several of my cousins and friends who all dispute her her version of events.

I'll dispute the Richard Hammond, I met him rather drunk and proceed to launch myself on him, declare my love for him and demand a hug from him. He was very sweet, very gracious and very nice. this was before the accident so he may have changed I've met loads of celebs in my old life as a PR girl and he was one of my favourites.

There's probably some truth in what you're saying but it's only recently I've started to dislike his act. I'd never been a massive fan beforehand but I saw him live in 2009 and thought he was fantastic - quite different to how I'd previously perceived him and a lot less smug than his TV persona: warm, self-deprecating and above all else funny. And I actually liked his contempt for other comedians because I kind of felt the same about most of them and it only took up a small part of the show.
On his recent tour though it seemed he spent the whole night grumpily banging on about Russell Howard and someome else whose name I've forgot* (it's him who presents that godawful chat-show on BBC3 with some other 'joker') and the lines between the real Lee and the curmudgeonly character he'd previously developed onstage were hard to see.
Also, I read his book a while back and while parts of it were interesting and genuinely funny, the constant dismissal of other comedians and his infated opinion of his own 'art' (including a particularly self-aggrandising section on Jerry Springer: The Opera) started to grate after a while.
Which is a shame, 'cos when he's good, he's great.

Sorry, I didn't mean to come across as a twat in the 'Twat' thread, but I did think that line was a bit sweeping. I think 'threatened' is the wrong word to use in this case. I actually like Stewart Lee, but I have no doubt there is a intellectual snobbery to his jokes that can grate - I actually hate it when a comedian tells a joke and then says something like "oh, about 30% of you got that, explain it to the others later maybe..." - no mate, most got it, not all found it funny. Just because something doesn't make my sides split, doesn't mean I am too stupid to get it. I get Lee's act, I get what he is doing and most of the time I am amused by it. However, there are times where he targets the wrong person and it doesn't come across like a self-depreciating remark about how out of touch he is, but actually a bitter poke at someone more successful. He may have layers of comedy to his persona, and I am (like many others) fully aware of them, but they just aren't always necessarily in place in some circumstances.

Sorry to ramble!

One of his daughters used to go to the same clinic as little HQ and we would often see him there and was always very nice. He also is very generous with donating signed bits and pieces to local fund-raisers.

Sorry, but he is a twat. Having had the misfortune of having to sit through one of his shows in a very small theatre I came away just thinking he was hughley bitter with a massive chip on his shoulder. I don't think this is part of his act, I believe he is just pissed off because he believes himself to be intellectually superior to just about everyone. He didn't make me laugh even once. Most of the people he spent all night slagging off have made me laugh at least once. He also spent a long time having a pop at Thatcher. Fair enough you might think? This was just a couple of years ago and with most of the audience (who were also twats) being in their early twenties this was entirely irrelevant.

Still, each to there own. And he is ceratainly not as big a twat as any of these people.

A mate of mine is a freelance journo and, when he was back over here in between his "day job" in the States (he was sent home not long after 9/11 and his Stateside employer only got back in touch recently), he did some online reporting and followed most of Galloway's now infamous "war against the war" campaign. Away from what the public saw and when the tools were down, he was apparently a great bloke to hang around with.

Similarly, he followed Chubby Brown (who he can't stand in terms of his act, but it was the job he was given by Chortle) on a few tours in the late 00s (and was "with" him during Brown's common assault case) and what he was expecting to find was a low brow, racist and sexist heavy drinker, but what he actually found (again, away from what the public see) was a quiet, likeable and world-wise fellow.

I know it's not aimed at me, but I cannot believe how downhill Channel 4 has gone. T4, not that it was ever great, is now just a plague of disgusting, vain hipsters. Nick Grimshaw? Who gave him a job?! Urgh. What a twat. All of them.
