I guess making mediocre music makes you a twat.

For inflicting her film career and her English accent on an unsuspecting public, Madonna has claims to twattery. Good music though.

I'll agree she probably should never have decided cinema was a good idea. Though I don't mind Desp Seeking Susan or Evita, that doesn't reaaaaaally make up for the duds.

Its funny how much you'll forgive though if you like someones art essentially. I mean, I don't see David "Nazi Salute" Bowie or John "spastic impressions" Lennon coming up too often in these kind of threads.

So we're not going to be smart and look for a reason why so many of them are like, we're just going to dismiss them all as twats as an empty, bitter, gesture? Cool.

Nope we assess them upon the persona they present to the public (which is often unpleasant) and to quote you "Its all part of exactly that though isn't it - the image?"

We can assess that image and call them such from that image as that is what we see.

To attempt to call them more would require actual access to their lives which we do not have and as such from the evidence and the information we can call them that in the same manner as we would call a bloke at work who acted in a similar manner such. They do not get free rein for their actions simply because of their job as that would be sychophantic.

Pretty much this.

I know MC started the cool person thread as a counterbalance to this, but maybe there should be a 'What a talented person and who gives a fuck if they're not always nice' thread as well.

You could argue he looks like a twat in the video for Wired For Sound-

I do like that song tough. And Madonna's Like A Prayer is actually one of my favourite songs of all time.

I'm not saying "lets just forgive them and assume its an image thing", I am saying it would be more interesting to explore why there are so many twats in pop music, if you want to look at it that way. Maybe you need a certain amount of twattish behavior to get into pop music, maybe you have to be a twat in the first place, maybe that kind of person is just drawn to it. But it would be more interesting than "Here is a picture of Elton John, lol what a twat", which is why this thread is one of the worst in ages on Emprie.

I think it's just that thing of fame and fortune being thrown at someone relatively normal and it going to their heads. Bill Murray said that everyone acts like an arsehole for the first two years that they're famous, but some people never get over it.

It was trying to explain Chevy more than condemn him, I think. Because the two of them are friends these days. But I can understand the logic. I think a lot of people in creative arts have that odd mix of self-belief and self-loathing, and when you suddenly get a lot of attention thrown your way, it really throws the ego out of whack.

I think it comes down to acknowledgements. It's long been suggested that there are quite a few artists of that ilk with fairly ludicrous song-writing credits (adding banal lines to completed songs, etc). And Madonna does seem to have a fair few subsequent changes to acknowledgements or payments in lieu. Aren't there already a couple of issues for the new album too?

First link was very very mad though - so many trees the wood was all but lost. It's not just Madonna that seems to appropriate the praise for other's videos - that one with Beyonce was the pretty clear, IMO. I mean, you can understand influencing, but video artists are presumably entitled to some ownership of their work, not some major artist seeing it and copying it for a major performance and getting all the plaudits for it being amazing.
