Well Alien's been re-rated a 15. I'm happy; Prometheus clearly is going to be as scary and intense as Alien... if that's possible!

You are missing the point. They are there're own original films. Prometheus is a prequel to Alien. Therefore should share the same tone of terror. sounds abit better than the R rating eh? 'sci-fi violence including intense images, and brief language'

anyway heres how Prometheus compares against the other BBFC Alien ratings:

Alien(DC) 15
Contains strong language, moderate violence and horror

A3 18
Contains strong bloody violence, horror and language

A4 18
strong horror and violence

AvP 15
Contains moderate horror

AvP2 15
Contains strong gory violence and language

Terminator 4 (12)
Contains moderate violence and intense action scenes

As for the certificate, whilst I acknowledge waltham's point that a classification shouldn't always set the basis for the intensity of a film, I would have been extremely worried had Prometheus received a12A. As others have mentioned, an Alien film needs to do a little more than suggest terror given its origins of chest bursting & so forth.

Also, giving it a 15 ensures no stupid parents will attempt to bring their toddlers with them (casing point, the Avengers).

Most horror is 15 these days...and anything that's 18 is usually crap .

Well, these explanations never cease to ask for making fun of them. Obviously it's neither "strong language" as in Alien, nor "[just average] language" like in Alien³. One would suspect that "brief language" is to distinguish from "long-winded language" and a dialogueless film would get the description "no language" ;)

The term "strong bloody violence" should be given a warning due to the word bloody. Perhaps "this classification contains bloody strong language"

Realistically if both Alien and Aliens were released today they would be rated 15 to. So about right.
