Assh*le Movies - 6/5/2012 10:36:32 AM

Just saw Die Hard again for the first time in a while and it's still as great as ever.

Yes, it's one of the best action movies ever made.

Yes it's one of the most influential movies ever made and one which from Speed to The Raid continues to be riffed on almost 25 years later.

Yes, it is a gamechanger which revolutionised a genre. Bruce Willis' vulnerable, blue collar everybloke (with a Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun and a Beretta - natch!) paved the way for the likes of Keeanu Reeves and Nic Cage in the 90s and marked the beginning of the end for the absurd, pumped-up likes of Stallone and Schwarzenegger (who, of course, turned down Die Hard when it was still Commando 2!), almost sounding the death knell for 007 in the process.

Speaking of Bond, Alan Rickman steals the first of many shows as The Greatest Bond Villain Who Never WasTM. Which is why Cubby Brocolli, his finger on the pulse of what was hip and happening in the 80s, hired Robert "Agent Johnson" Davi as the next Bond villain.

Which in turn brings me to my main point. Which is - Die Hard is also one of the great Assh*le Movies of all time! As well as the aforementioned Special Agent Johnsons (who are dicks in every sense!) Die Hard also has the holy trinity of Paul Gleeson, William Atherton and Hart Bochner in it - all in full-on, towering assh*le mode. Great character actors of the first rank all, these selfless gentlemen are true giants of the cinema of arseh*lery and I salute them. By making the universal sign of the wanker and/or dickhead behind their backs.

(Die Hard, of course, also stars Bruce Willis in full-on, punch-in-the-face, smirk mode as well. If you're feeling ungenerous or all-inclusive, like...)

Another asshole movie (and another Bruce Willis film) would be Armageddon. Pretty much every character in it is a twat, same goes for the director.

Ghostbusters has a couple of good ones. Dean Yeager at the beginning of the film and of course uber-a**ehole William Atherton as Walter Peck. In the sequel you had Kurt Fuller and Harris Yulin filling out the a**ehole quota albeit less successfully. In fact one of the things I love most about the Ghostbusters is their defiance of bureaucracy. It suits Bill Murray's style of humour so well.

I like that the less offensive part of 'asshole' was censored.

Prometheus deserves a mention here.Fifield and Milburn especially.

Or maybe those characters were just plain dumb instead of being assholes?

That's a good one. Everyone acts like an A-hole (but I think that might be more to do with poor writing trying to push the plot along than anything).

Does an arsehole have to be male? Not an anatomy question, just a point of semantics really.

EDIT: homer beat me to it, see above ^^

William Atherton was good at being an asshole in the '80s.

****EDIT, just in case someone wants to be smart, I'm obviously referring to "Shawshank" not Ace Ventura 2!

So basically people are just naming unpleasant characters in movies?

His character in Ace Ventura would be a better answer as he is a movie arsehole, the warden in Shawshank is a bad guy, not an arsehole

Begbie in Trainspotting, total dick.

Just realised, isn't this pretty much the 'most hated character in a movie' thread? I know the OP was about characters who are dicks but you kinda like, but it's just turned into naming characters we hate.

Nah, hated characters are like Carrie in Four Weddings or Ruby Rhod in Fifth Element, unintentionally irritating or poorly portrayed. Arseholes were always designed to be arseholes, and are well played as such by brilliant actors.

Like this arsehole.

Shallow Grave. The three protagonists, the two coppers, the ginger waiter, Keith Allen, the lads who're after Keith Allen. All of them. Complete @rseholes.
