I'm going to wrench conversation away from our recent Adobe issues for a minute and ask you a couple of design-related questions. We're revamping the look and feel of the iPad edition for the next issue and I wanted to get your honest feelings about in-line scrolling text (such as that found in our larger reviews and a few other places). I seem to recall people genearally moaning about that method of page design early on (we did it for expedience). How do people feel now? Would you prefer to see, say, the lead review on one, single page with a scroll box of text or would you rather have it as a four page stack with all the copy laid out page-by page (with the odd image thrown in, naturally)?

While you're at it, feel free to chip in any other thoughts you have as well.

Personally I prefer moving down page by page with images and whatnot on each page if we're talking about features. I don't mind reviews and the odd bits here and there that are scrolly (e.g. the little sidebars) though.
I really like on some features where you now put moving text or fade text in etc - I think that really adds a nice touch to the ipad version - makes it stand out as being different.

I don't mind the scrolling text at all. I like the way it keeps each review on one page.

I prefer at least scrolling as possible.

Also I love that I don't have to zoom in to read the text as it is now.

James & Team... I'm very much in the "consistency" camp... sometimes ( and as with all things in life, the pain here is relative) the switching of "Scrolling up and down within a text box" to "scrolling left and right within a text box" to "Flat pages that scroll in their entirety" can be a distraction/mildly annoying. Also, some times the "Scroll within a text box" has no direction arrow, e.g. The Classic Scene in the current issue. Only other minor gripe is the positioning of the "Page Up/Page Down" arrows... E.G in the current edition: The Mission Impossible GP review - 1st page the "down" arrow is bottom right, the 2nd page the up arrow on bottom left, yet the next article is "Kim Newmans Video Dungeon" which has no arrows, yet is a 3 page article! FWIW though, the current offering is one of the better magazine conversions...

I do find the scrolly bits (much as I actually like them) don't work properly, if they are "sideways scrolly" then sometimes it scrolls to the next page instead.

Have you evr looked at T3 iPad edition? That's the way to do a magazine IMHO.

I love the new layout.

Agree, it's a really clean, nice experience. It looks stunning on iPad (3) too.
