Newman was the better actor and has a much better filmography (and I say that as a massive McQueen fan), but McQueen was waaay cooler.

Coolest? McQueen for me, hands down.

A more watchable actor though, Newman wins every time.

Newman is one of my all-time heroes and favourite actors. Never got the love for McQueen personally.

Any decent looking person can pout and be cool-ish. But to be genuinelly nice and cool as well? Thats takes some skills...so Newman all the way.

Newman as he had far more depth and a great look to go along with it. In fairness I have not seen much of McQueen, but can't see he would match up to a legend.

Steve "God" McQueen. Coolest man who ever lived. I wish I was even a tenth as cool as McQueen (but I'm not). Of course, this doesn't mean that Newman isn't also cool, just not as cool.

Better actor-definitely Paul Newman.
Best filmography Paul Newman.
Most iconic and memorable movies-draw.
Newman has The Hustler,Cat On A Hot Tin Roof,Cool Hand Luke,Butch Cassidy.
Mcqueen has Bullitt,The Getaway,The Great Escape,The Magnificent Seven,Junior Bonner.

Newman for me. By some distance.

McQueen was probably "cooler" in an anti-establishment sense, did some great work with Peckinpah (The Getaway, Junior Bonner) and was excellent in Papillon but his three most famous roles (The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape and The Towering Inferno) were essentially showy parts in big ensembles (and he was out-acted by Newman in the last) whilst the cult classic that is Bullitt is actually a plodding, turgid bore. Plus, The Cincinnati Kid is a poor man's The Hustler.

Besides, nothing McQueen ever did matches the brilliance of Paul Newman in Hud. That performance alone puts Newman on a level above most other actors.

I've always thought McQueen's best movies were Hell Is For Heroes (again, an ensemble piece) and Papillon.

I agree with pretty much all of this. I also think Newman was cooler.

Steve McQueen was a very good actor, but Paul Newman was a great actor.

As the question was "who's cooler?" I plumped for McQueen, despite preferring Newman.

"Coolness" is superficial. McQueen got to ride motorbikes away from Nazis and jump down San Franciscan hills in great cars. But most crucially of all, he died much younger. We never saw him grow frail and fragile. He never diminished in stature. It's like asking if Lennon or McCartney is cooler. Lennon, like McQueen, never faced the indignity of old age and its harm to the reputation. Imagine how much cooler we'd consider Brando if he'd flickered out after On The Waterfront and had never become fat and old.

Also, McQueen, to my knowledge, never marketed salad dressings.

But I really must stress, Newman was more brilliant in every way.

I disagree, I think he was really attractive then. Perhaps at the end of the 70s, before he died, when he grew more wiry and his face got leaner, but he still looked cooler than McCartney - he just always had more attitude. (My mum made me laugh when she said she that, at the height of their fame, she was immune to McCartney's charm on account of him "seeming so pathetic". Yup, she was a Stones girl!)

However, we deviate a little.
