Apprentice biohazard Sergeant James Heller dons some jazzy claws and strains the waste disposal unit of New York with a trail of lethal silly string and viral debris. After tangling with his nemesis, Alex Mercer, Heller gropes his way around his new powers with the cheerful abandon you’d expect from somebody recently widowed, he’s soon pulling the turrets off tanks and windmilling them at anybody within range. Skill progression is earned by ripping limbs off bosses and consuming their powers, consuming henchmen disguises you for when a stealthy approach is required. The tragic family backstory fleshes out Heller’s character, but it’s hard to buy the mournful revenge angle when he’s all too happy to curbstomp innocent bystanders to top up his health bar. Otherwise the plot is inconsequential and the script is an adolescent expletive-fest. Every game cries “sandbox” for the hype and sales, yet Prototype 2 lacks the detail and variety to entice the exploration which created the sandbox selling point. However, you can’t criticise the brilliantly puerile liberty of bounding around skyscrapers like a gliding squirrel with ‘roid rage. Skip the cutscenes and revel in the gorgeous chaos of toe punting a few choppers out of the air, you won’t be disappointed.
