We're waiting for an app update to be approved before we can release it. Apple are reviewing now so hopefully tomorrow morning.

I truly believe that it isn't James fault.

This is about the 6th edition that hasn't been online at the same time as the print edition is released and it's always, Adobe or Apple's problem? It's James' department, so if it isn't his fault it is certainly his responsibility. Don't have these waits with GQ, Project, T3, etc. Empire is supposed to be 'The World's Best Movie Magazine' but their support for iPad customers is far from world class... and don't even get me started on the price!

We've just finished checking it with the new update and seen no issues. I've even managed to get the SD version down to 334MB, which should take the strain off your bandwidth somewhat. The retina version's a not too traumatic 700MB. Should be on sale within the hour.

I do appreciate that it's a right pain in the arse when delays occur (though a little civility wouldn't go amiss). Sadly, we don't own Apple and we don't own Adobe, instead we're reliant on both. This is partly my responsibilty as I made the decision not to put out the June issue without retina support for iPad 3 users. That necessitated an app update with a short turnaround for approval and thus delayed us by a day. For you iPad 1/2 users it's just annoying but for those with iPad 3s, I think you'll find it very much worth the extra 24 hours.

Regarding the mag/ipad subscription debacle - yearh, we dropped the ball and your ire is probably deserved. We are once again dependent on a third party to get that working (oops, there goes that Shoddy Service Excuse Machine again) and have no direct control but I should never have announced it until we had 100% confirmation as to when it would be done. I'm like George R R Martin in microcosm (and far less talented).

Thanks for the update James. It's only because we love the magazine so much that we get frustrated when it's not here! And being a huge Bond fan myself I'm especially keen to get my eyes on this issue. I appreciate that you take the time to respond on the forums though.

Matt

Anyone having problems since the app update? I can only see the issues I have bought, none of the old issues available to buy and not the new one either.

Do you have a new iPad 3 by any chance? If so then bear with us, Adobe are in the process of fixing this problem.

The way the retina thing works is we upload an SD and an HD version and publish both - the Pad then chooses the appropriate one to download. I named them SD and HD and this seems to have cause the iPad 3 to have a nervous breakdown as it gets confused. Adobe are renaming them to the same thing and testing it to make sure that's the issue. Shoulnd't take too long.

Just subscribed to Empire app, but only get the option to buy the latest issue instead of just Download. Tried uninstalling the app and rebooting a couple of times but to no avail.
It recognises issues I've bought in the past. Is this another Adobe screw up?
What should I do to get the issue without having to pay?

Try selecting Buy anyway, it may not actually charge you. If it does, then just give Apple support an email. They are very good with refunds of this nature

Thanks Meus,
I just got the subscription cancelled by Apple, bought the single issue instead. At least Apple's customer service is up to scratch...
Latest issue looks great in retina quality, shame the subscription didn't work.

The sub issue might be related to the problems people had last week. Though uninstalling and reinstalling always fixed it in those cases...

Hi James

Reinstalling the app does not work. It still asks you to buy the new issue.

Hope you can help.

Yeah, I've spoken to Adobe and it seems to be related to the fact that we now have multiple renditions (Retina and normal). they're working on a fix as we speak.

I'm sure issues like this would disappear if Apple released their own tools to create the magazine. There were complaints when Apple insisted that 3rd party tools couldn't be used to create Apps for iOS, but maybe they should have stuck to their guns - James would have much fewer headaches at least.

I was actually saying just that yesterday. It's intensely frustrating to be so reliant on third party infrastructure of any kind but then I can only imagine the carnage that would ensue if our own tech monkeys were let anywhere near it...

I'm trying to download the latest issue, but it gets stuck at 692,6 MB (iPad 3). If I press view I get a update suggestion, but that doesn't work either. I also tried to delete it and reboot both the app and the news stand, and guess what? Same procedure again.

Sounds like an issue with Adobe's server. Gernerally the solution is to delete the issue and start the download again (which you've tried) or reinstall the app (which would likely be overkill). It might just be a temporary glitch so give it a go in a couple of hours.

Hi James

Is this Adobe issue for new 12 months subscribers now resolved?

Thanks

I'm having this exact problem too. I had actually downloaded the full issue prior to being prompted to update it too...

Same here. Downloaded issue fine. Went to read it - got told there's an update. Download update and it completes THEN tells me there's an error and to try again later.

Why is this always Empire that has problems? It's ridiculous. Every other newspaper and magazine downloads with no problem.

Sorry James - had enough and have cancelled my subscription,
