been a bit off the pace in the last year or so i might have missed some stuff, but ive kinda realised over time that 90% of Special Features are rubbish.

There was time when i'd pay extra for some DVD's purely for some special features which would then turn out of be pointless fodder, so my question is...

what's the best special feature documentaries? not so much interested in commentaries more the real good 'making of' type stuff or 'story behind the film' kinda features.

anyone?

I like the Pearl Harbor and Bad Boys 2 production diaries, especially when bay goes apeshit, although theyre not technically documentaries.

The Boardwalk Empire making of stuff is some of the most inreresting recent ones i've seen. Also anything on the Alien Anthology.

Michael Bay is an idiot.

I love Magnolia's making of doc. Hitting it Hard, I believe it's called.

I enjoyed the Shadow of the Bat on the Batman & Batman Returns Blu Ray. Any of the documentaries on the Star Trek movies 1-11 are great to watch as well.

Dangerous Days: Making Blade Runner is a pretty exhaustive making of doc. Pretty lengthy at 3 and a half hous long as well. Hearts of Darkness is also a brilliant behind the scenes look at the making of Apocalypse Now.

Nothing comes close to the Alien blu rays in my opinion. Not much more you could need to know from the films, save a Fincher commentary for Alien 3 which'll never happen...

Whatever your opinions on the films there are plenty of great Star Wars docs such as Empire of Dreams from the 2004 boxset, on the old TPM and AOTC discs there are some surprisingly candid docs.

A Cut Above The Rest from the Halloween disc.

The Fear of God - Making of The Exorcist.

Beware The Moon - from the American Werewolf blu-ray, great stuff.

The production diaries on the Hellboy movies are pretty damn impressive.

On the old Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut special edition DVD there's some fairly exhaustive and in-depth stuff - material that wasn't carried over onto the blu-ray, alas.

The Lord of the Rings documentaries, goes without saying.

Never Sleep Again - an incredible in-depth 4 hour documentary covering the Elm Street movies from the original to Freddy vs Jason. Brilliant stuff, revealing, candid, and also very funny.

The Top Gun special edition has a really good retrospective one. About half an hour longer than the film itself  if I recall correctly - surprised me somewhat when I first watched it as I was expecting it to be maybe 45 ins or so at most.

Full Tilt Boogie, the making of From Dusk Til Dawn is pretty cool.

Yeah that's pretty cool.

The Battle for Brazil on the Criterion release of Brazil is awesome as well.
