Yeah, please stop linking to those fuckers.
I think Johnson certainly had grounds to ban the bus advert, simply for being false advertising to begin with, I'm sure there's a law against that. But the original ad is awful as well - who exactly is it aimed at? Homophobes will not exactly be swayed by "get over it", while gay rights supporters are long over it, naturally. So it's a waste of ad space, Stonewall's money, and needless provocation with poor rhetoric.

Turns out it's not just an awful thing to do ("curing" homosexuality), it's malpractice (link)

That's the funniest piece of satire I've seen for ages. Brilliant!

While I'd agree that an influx of trangendered competitors at the Olympics would wreak havoc on the record books...

that article is hysterical (as in, characterized by hysteria) and just sad. Really, dear humans, this is 2012, do try to grow up. The notion that allowing a transgendered competitor in a subjective beauty contest suggests that the logic behind the contestant's inclusion would in any way apply to a competiton of athletics... it's just so sad, and desperate. Don't these superstitious types have real world troubles to concern themselves with? These wild flights of fancy are just so pathetic and embarrassing.

BTW it just needs to be said that the article's author is attracted to this beauty contestant. His need to tear down transgendered women is such hilarious over compensation. Don't worry, Irish bigot newspaper guy, of course now the last thing we'd think is that you saw that photo and felt uncomfortable confusion.

One has nothing to do with t'other.  Universe is fluff pr rubbish thingy.

The IOC does allow transgender athletes and many other orgs followed suit. While their criteria may be problematic (I'd have thought the issue of male puberty and the resulting stronger body mass should have been key) the issue has at least been partly addressed and the ignorance of people like this is pretty unhelpful.

Is this for real? An absoltutely disgusting article. The bulk of the article annoys me but I think it's the tasteless attempts at humour that really boil my blood.

The quality of the writing is also incredibly poor. I find it difficult to believe that it was really a professional journalist writing that? it came across as something some form of troll would leave on a comment section.

I want to know why they attached a photo of Phoebe Buffay to the article.

Well I don't agree with that... there are concrete biological differences between men and women that would come into play in a test of athleticism. If we're talking gender identity that's one thing, if we're talking about who is the strongest woman, ETC, it's another.

Best solution would to just have all humans compete on a level playing field. No separate competitions for men and women. If you're good enough to medal, to be the best on the planet at your event, then bully for you. If not, too bad. Gender shouldn't come into it. The idea of having separate events for women reminds of the 'special olympics'.

She's been defending herself against some of the backlash on Twitter, stating amongst other things:

When accused of being deliberately provocotive in order to fill colm inches:

quote:

Or possibly I am troubled by transgender participation in female beauty pagents and wanted to express it pithily?

quote:

Girls, I take it all back. You're all so shriekingly hysterical, you really must be women! (Sergeant, add sexism to the charge sheet.)

One thing that I've gathered from reading the article and twitter feed (https://twitter.com/#!/eilisohanlon) is that she appears to pick bones with the idea of gender 'change' outside a cosmetic and psychological aspect, and opposes the changing of birth certificates. She apparently believes in equality and integration for those who've had/going through sex change operations. Thing is surely by her own logic then, the article she wrote is effectively taking the piss out of people with 'mental issues' (oh that's okay then) and she shouldn't have an issue with beauty contests, as they are, essentially cosmetic in nature. Unless they've started to introduce a spear test round that I haven't been made aware of.

Anyway, not the brightest women by the sounds of it.

I meant smear, though there's probably not much difference between the two.

Not sure what your point is here - what exactly is wrong with the special olympics?
