Was listening to the new soundtrack release for Hook earlier and despite being a big fan of the score have never actually seen the film.A childrens fantasy flick about a grown up Peter Pan just doesnt appeal to me.Anyway, out of curiosity i checked out the trailer on youtube and was amused by how it makes the the movie look like a slasher flick!

http://youtu.be/ixlUAr54QlI

Any other examples of a movie trailer getting it so wrong in its advertising?

The trailer for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button made it look like a good film.

The Host trailer makes it look like a Korean monster movie. What you get is an awkward family comedy/drama with a fucking big fish in it.

Red Eye, It's the bit with the red eyes that could make people think it's a supernatural thriller.- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAFDHyH8buQ

Cold Creek Manor also makes it look like like the film is a haunted house supernatural flick- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63im_q9i660

Then, of course, there's Bridge To Terabithia- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SvqEIKP4t8

I assume it depends on which one you watch. The one I saw before a Youtube video is probably spot on

None of the trailers I have seen really tell you about the movie.

I won't say which one I saw in case it is a massive spoiler and a marketing cock-up. If it is, then I'm pissed off I saw it. It was hardly unavoidable.

I know it's already been mentioned, but Drive totally mislead me. I wasn't that fussed about seeing it after watching the trailer, which made it look like just another Fast & Furious movie, but it turned out to be so much better than that. Mad advertising.

The trailer for the third Transformers movie tried to promote it as a much better film than it actually turned out to be.

The trailer for The Descendants sold it as a much more knockabout comedy than it actually was.

I would totally agree with this.
Its the main reason it took me a while til I saw the movie after the positive reviews.

John Carter had an abysmal trailer.

Much as I liked A Single Man, based on the trailer I was expecting some kind of dark murder mystery.

The trailers (and the general advertising campaign) for Green Zone tried to convince audiences that a new Bourne film was out ( '' BOURNE GOES EPIC! '').Naturally the film flopped because it WAS NOT A BOURNE MOVIE (Despite the fact that Green Zone is a good film).

There is one out there that shows you something that I would rather not know going in. Two things if you include the bird. They should have just stuck a trailer out for a regular teen slasher flick for that film.

Obviously haven't seen the film yet (so just being facetious really) but the trailers for Battleship are certainly doing their level best to convince me that a film based on a simple peg placing strategy game largely involving saying 'hit' or 'miss' is as exciting a concept as Transformers - alien robots that can turn into vehichles and make cool noises while doing it.

Quite misleading in my opinion, as it blatantly isn't!

Just realised that not only does the trailer for Inception have Leonardo Di Caprio saying that there is an idea and he 'has to steal it', but it's also on the main menu for the blu-ray.

As seen here:

Total agree with The Bridge To Terebithia

Dark Shadows also comes to mind. The trailer advertised a wacky knockabout "fish out of the water" comedy only for it to turn out that the funny parts shown were nearly all the funny parts in the film, a film that also contained:

SPOILERS

A little girl being sent to a mental asylum by her parents, put into shock therapy and locked in a cell.
A father walking out on his 8 year old son.
Our lovable hero brutally murdering like thirty innocent people.

Good Times!

Only just got this, having just watched the film and then googled the trailer!

To be fair, it outlines the plot fairly clearly. I certainly don't think the trailer was too Fast and Furiousy!

Having watched The Adjustment Bureau yesterday, I would say it's trailer qualifies for 'misleading'! Here was I all ready to watch a sci/fi thriller about a shady government department, politics and magic hats, but instead we get about 3 minutes of running through doors with said magic hats, zero tension, something about angels and God's plan, with the majority of the run-time devoted an unbelievable romance with characters I didn't much care for. I was disappointed to say the least!

The marketing tagline was misleading as hell as well! 'Bourne meets Inception'....'lazy journalism meets cliche'' more like!

Jarhead is a film about American troops in Iraq spending most of their time getting so bored that it's literally driving them insane because there's nothing to do.
The Jarhead trailer makes it look like an action epic.

I really,really didn't like that film.
The whole concept in the end seemed utterly pointless.

Not seen it in a while, but I seem to remember the Vanilla Sky trailer being very misleading.
