Well, I was going to post the bestest trailer in the world ever, but I feel so defeated now.

Amazing thread.......

Well you could always contribute something....

The 300 trailer is an impressive piece of work, in that I don't want to see the film again (it is a one and done type film) but the trailer always makes me want to see it.

The trailer for Oliver Stone's Bush Jr. biopic W. (with that Talking Heads song) was pretty amazing. Sadly judging from reviews it seemed to show a better film than Stone actually made...

The Star Wars prequels had pretty awesome trailers.

I think my favourite was the Men In Black trailer though. I remember watching it in the cinema when the huge ship crashes down in front of Smith and Jones () and the dust cloud envelops them. Awesome moment.

I remember the Independance Day trailer rocking the world. Especially, or particularly because of, the blowing up of the Whitehouse at the end. Fantastic.

On a personal note I find the T2 trailer that is, apparently, the greatest trailer ever, slightly dull and old fashioned. I know it's 20 years old now but still...

There are tons of trailers far, far better. End of....

I love the original Alien trailer, aswell as Aliens (the trailer music by James Horner has been recycled countless times for dozens of action film trailers since - Time Cop to name but one).

Most recently I loved the trailer for Prometheus (esp trailer 2)! The job of a trailer as we all know is to whet the appetite, get our juices flowing, and boy have 20th Century Fox done a job on this one!

I wish I could get into a time machine and skip forward to June 1 !!!

Love this trailer, though apparently it was rarely used:

Another favourite classic:

THE HAUNTING

And:

POLTERGEIST

And although I don't really like the sequel I love the trailer:

POLTERGEIST 2

All of the above are good (Aprt from The dark knight one which is pretty average).

But none can match THIS

Just proves that you dont need massive explosions or jaw dropping effects to sell your film.
Understated genius.

I''ve just watched that trailer on Youtube for the first time - I agree the song works very well. What I didn't like about it though (and it was the same in another one I watched) was the whole 'role call' type montage of the characters. One thing that put me off watching the film was that it just looked like an impressions sketch show in a way, and those trailers sort of added to that image for me.

I remember being wowed by these two at the time:

The Matrix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UM5yepZ21pI)

Kill Bill (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-czwy-aVbbU) - Awesome music on this one in particular. Back when we were still expecting it to be one film...

I agree, a touch naff nowdays in my opinion, although nowhere near as terrible as some old trailers. I remember seeing this one for Raw Deal on an old VHS my parents had years ago - hilariously poorly done and fairly typical for the time I think.

Not say these are 'the best' but they are rather good-

The Shining- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6qDqdYY6-Y&feature=player_embedded
(a very simple but rather bloody unnerving trailer)

The Minus Man- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MG6cZvL0NQ
(A little known film about Owen Wilson as a serial killer but quite a genius trailer as it shows no clips of the film. Instead its has a couple discuss the film after leaving the cinema. It's a bit morbid.)

Cloverfield-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvNkGm8mxiM&feature=player_embedded
(Hate the film all you want but that trailer was good)

Face/Off- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vlg-VRc6TbY&feature=player_embedded
(A trailer that vaguely explains the plot but just shows lots of action. I like the especially shot intro, though)

Comedian- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVDzuT0fXro&feature=player_embedded
(A trailer that sends up trailers yet shows nothing of the actual film)

The Revenge Of The Sith trailer made me think that maybe Lucas was going to give us one decent prequel movie.... The "Lord Vader".... "Yes, Master"....... "Riiiiiise" line is still 1000 times better in the trailer. It was almost thrown away in the full movie.

You know, I'm going to go with the T2 one. Trailers give away far too much and they actually went and filmed something seperately.

The Phantom Menace trailer was phenomenal, despite the actual film

Also, one of the trailers to The Fellowship of the Ring, with Gandalf's voice over ('The enemy will use many spies. Birds! Beasts!') was astounding.

More recently, the last Prometheus trailer really stands out as being something special
Watched about four or five times now and still gives me goosebumps

Although its not cool to like them anymore I'd say the best trailers in recent memory are Inception and TGWTDT. Great use of music and some tidy editing.

The entire advertising campaign for The Muppets was pretty awesome.
