11. Big Spender
Sweet Charity, 1969

Sweet Charity has some fantastic scenes, but this is one of the most perfectly choreographed scenes in movie musical history. The timing is just perfect. The costumes and lighting are spot on. The music is wonderful and that zoom out to the ashtray is amazing.

Watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG3VfKlfDEk

Yeah, it's good (one of the best scenes in a movie that I found very disappointing), though I prefer the version in Little Voice - the way it's set up makes it so uplifting.

You ever see the Adam & Joe t.v. series? There was one sketch where they did a Bob Hoskins parody, that had Adam doing really broad Cockney and singing and dancing with street urchins to a song made up of Hoskins' film titles "Mer me maids, Blue me ice..." and every time I see Caine dance in Muppets, I think of that Hoskins parody, for some reason.

Never seen it - but it sounds amazing!!

I found that far, far funnier than I think it actually is. I lost it when the dance started.

12. Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)
Beetlejuice, 1989

From my favourite Tim Burton film, a scene which never fails to make me laugh. The song choice is perfect and the performances are fantastic. The greatest performance of this song (the second greatest is the version on The Muppet Show).

Nah, it's as funny as you find it. Everything from Adam's first foghorny bellow that starts the song is gold.

13. Hey Stella!

A Streetcar Named Desire, 1951

A Streetcar Named Desire is one of my favourite plays, and apart from changing the ending, the film is a damn good adaptation. This famous scene is one of the best from that era of film. The music is wonderful, seedy and sexy. Stella's slow walk down the stairs is beautifully done. The whole thing is unforgettable.

14. The Final Scene
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, 2011

I won't say what happens in this scene because it's full of spoilers. However, I will say that it's perfect. The use of La Mer is one of the most inspired song choices in film - it works beautifully. The whole thing is put together brilliantly. It's one of my favourite ending scenes, and one of the best scenes of last year.

Banana Boat Song. Yeah, Muppets > Beetlejuice. I love the Stan Freberg version as well. Streetcar is a good scene, love the end of Tinker...

That Beetlejuice moment had me in stitches the first time I watched it.

The end of Tinker, Tailor is brilliant, as was the rest of the film. Not sure if it's my favourite bit though, but that's because there are so many to choose from.

2. The Phone Call
A Single Man, 2009

Oh Mr Darcy, I knew you were good, but I didn't know you were that good. Colin Firth should have walked away with an Oscar for this scene alone. Barely moving a muscle, you see his entire world collapse around him in seconds. Heartbreaking.

Watch here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cz1SsfxFDk

It's phenomonal isn't it? Firth went from rom com chap to one of the best actors around with one scene for me. Subtlety is key.

Love the Beetlejuice scene. Not seen Streetcar and as for TTSS it's a good scene to end a disappointing film.

I know, there's plenty of fab scenes in there, but the end is just so satisfying. I had no idea how they could end it well, but (and I think a lot of it is to do with the awesome song and Cumberbatch's smile at Smiley as they pass each other), it was perfect.

That Tinker scene is ace, the Streetcar scene would be if it involved a good actor.

15. S'Wonderful
An American in Paris, 1951

There may be techically better scenes in An American in Paris, but this is my favourite. It's lovely. More than lovely, it's gorgeous. Gene Kelly and Georges Guétary are charming and their joy is contagious. The song is one of my favourites too. The whistling, the dancing - it just puts a smile on my face.

16. I Scream, You Scream, We Alll Scream for Ice Cream
Down By Law, 1986

Tom Waits may or may not be God (to be honest, may is looking more likely the more I listen to him). John Lurie is also occasionaly pretty cool (Fishing With John is a genius of a television programme). This scene is therefore great. Even Roberto Benigni isn't annoying in it. That's how good this scene is.

It's a sudden scream in the middle of a pretty quiet film. It's fab.

good choices so far. i think a couple of classics that have stuck with me include de niros scene in goodfellas in the restaurant where he is smoking before killing the man, as well as al pacinos in the godfather where he kills the two men in the restaurant

17. La Marseillaise
Casablanca, 1942

A classic scene from a classic film. It's so powerful. And the most moving part is that a large number of the extras in this scene were actual refugees from Nazi persecution in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. As a film, there are parts I don't like, but this scene is just fantastic.

18. Minnie the Moocher
The Blues Brothers, 1980

Cab Calloway, aged 73, gives a damn cool and classy performance. It's just wicked. There's also some very simple but effective comedy too, as Jake and Elwood move in time to the music beautifully. It's one of those scenes that highlights how simple it is to make something great - it's doesn't try to wow the audience, it just comes naturally to someone like Calloway.
