101 Great Movie Scenes - 6/4/2012 7:55:15 PM

Evening all,

This is a work-in-progress, continuous type list where I shall list (well duh) scenes in cinema history that would all reside in a scene-only Hall of Fame (if such a thing existed). There will be some famous ones, some not-so famous ones, a fair amount of spoilers and a healthy amount of musicals.

It isn't a list of the greatest scenes and there is no order to it - it's just a collection of scenes that stuck with me.

1. The Man That Got Away

To be perfectly honest, I can barely remember A Star is Born. I last saw it around 12 years ago, when I was six or seven. But what I can remember is this scene - Judy Garland is quite simply phenomenal in it. With one of the greatest female voices ever recorded in film, she makes an already moving song into something else; a powerful, emotional outburst of something more self-aware and stronger than pathetic-ness, bur still with a plea of desperation. It's wonderful.

2. The Phone Call
A Single Man, 2009

Oh Mr Darcy, I knew you were good, but I didn't know you were that good. Colin Firth should have walked away with an Oscar for this scene alone. Barely moving a muscle, you see his entire world collapse around him in seconds. Heartbreaking.

This is a great idea for a list-I considered doing this once, but there's just too many angling for a spot!

Not seen either of the two examples, but I'll be keeping an eye on this.

Nice choices. I watched A Star is Born a few days ago, it was really fantastic. I think the scene you've chosen is the epitome of Garland, totally immersed in the moment, she doesn't hold back. Not that I think she can't control her emotions, I think she's quite fearless in showing the right emotion. I've got great admiration for people who can embrace their talents without a second thought, I think she stands quite apart from many other Hollywood actresses of her time.

Great choices so far, and yeah, Firth should have nailed the Oscar.

I'd really recommend A Single Man - it has its faults, but the performances are amazing and it's so pretty.

Completely agree. I think to many she's just Dorothy, when in reality she was far more talented that most give her credit for. That voice is spectacular.

Don't worry, there's one coming up you like/love/adore madly.

3. Train Tracks
The Wrong Trousers

The greatest animated sequence ever, this scene is perfect. If there is a heaven, this is the scene they show every day. Although I prefer Were-Rabbit overall, this is Wallace and Gromit at their finest. From Gromit having to lay out more track to that dastardly penguin being trapped in a bottle, it's all wonderful.

Here's the whole film (scene starts at 24:00): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKZdsPvJq60&feature=related

Gotta agree with that scene from A Single Man - Firth should have won the Oscar for it.

The Wrong Trousers - amazing, amazing, amazing.

That Wrong Trousers scene is easily my favourite Wallace and Gromit moment-great choice!

When my elder brother first saw the the train sequence from The Wrong Trousers it is literally the only time I've ever seen anybody ROFL. It is absolute perfection and one of the greatest things in existence.

Also, one essential W&G collaborator who never gets the credit he deserves is composer Julian Nott and that sequence shows why he's so brilliant. I love that music so much.

Great idea for a thread. I haven't seen A Single Man, but I think I'd have the other two in my 101. Nice reviews too. Just been having a chat with God and apparently there is a heaven and they do show that scene from The Wrong Trousers every day. And some Nicholas Brothers stuff.

Every now and then Gimli, you say something so right it makes up for previous statements.

I've never met anyone who dislikes The Wrong Trousers - I can't imagine why anyone would.

And next up, another train scene.

4. The Train
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

I'm sure it's obvious that I like this film a lot, as I'm currently playing the role of vote-whore in HoF with it. And this scene is one of the main reasons behind my mad infatuation with it. It is beautiful. The visuals are amazing, drenched in a slow, quiet beauty- the kind that only when you finish you realise you've been holding your breath. The music is divine too, matching the scene perfectly. The whole scene isw breathtaking - I would loved to have seen it on the big screen.

5. Sugar Ray Johnson
Raging Bull, 1980

One of many amazing scenes in an unforgettable film, Jake LaMotta gets brutally beaten in beautiful black-and-white. It's painful to watch, yet you can't tear your eyes away.

Two brilliant choices - although for some strange reason I always think De Niro looks/sounds a bit like Adam Sandler in that sequence.

6. Moses Supposes
Singin' in the Rain, 1952

It seems difficult to pick a great scene in Singin' in the Rain, one of the truely great films, but this scene is the one that's stuck with me all these years. It sums up the film completely - fun, bursting with talent and so full of joy that you want to get up and join in. Just sublime.

Watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKlub5vB9z8

Moses Supposes is a great sequence-but Make 'Em Laugh is much better.

Disagreed. But do you know what's better than both of them? Singin' in the Rain.

Gotta agree - so many great parts but the best known is best known for a reason. Of course, it's not as good as this

No, it is, it's actually quite a lot better than that (unless you meant the smiley, in which case you are possibly correct).

I think this is probably my favourite number ever in a film, though:
