So in honour of it being Pi Day (March 14th) I thought I'd start a thread for all awesome things that come from design/engineering/re-purposing that kind of thing.

So a couple to start you off...

Lego Beer chooser, opener & chiller

brilliant bit of engineering using everybody's favourite building block - Lego!

got a friend that constantly spills things? get one of these - a tablecloth that reveals a hidden pattern when it happens

So anybody got anything else?

have you found something to do with an old computer? taken an ordinary household item and made it extraordinary? share your enthusiasm for simple home-brew ingenuity.

Just so we're clear, whilst i'm sure the new Samsung tablets are good, or the new macbook has a new shiny, rather than brushed, aluminium skin, could we avoid huge corporate entities, lets share the things people have come up with on their day off

and, should anybody ask the question, "why?" the answer is simple - because we can

those are pretty sweet, not sure if I'd shell out 2 grand for them, but you can't beat a bit of art deco...

also here's a tip for film photographers...

Link

basically to get the vintage film effect, as seen here

chuck your film in the dishwasher (I'm not sure if that's before or after you expose the film)

Origami King Cobra!

You can find instructions to make this thing online, but apparently it's an expert level project and takes upwards of 20 hours

Those Boba Fett sneakers are ace, and I don't even like STAR WARS anymore.... Gods, if there was any way I could justify such a purchase at this moment I might actually go for it. It kills me they're no doubt a limited edition, and they don't just produce Mandalorian shoes year round.

Bah.

EDIT: MOMENT OF GEEK: As far as I'm concerned, he'll always be Jaster Mereel, Journeyman Protector of the planet Concord Dawn. Forget that Jango/clone/PREQUEL noise.

Nice, I get the feeling that engineers have been doing this for ages, just that Youtube has let them tell the world.

I'm going for a twofer here - Link

1 check out this guy's channel on youtube - it's called "smarter every day" and he tries to show various physics things (like crazy RC helicopter pilotry *click*)

2 - he's building the Hi-Viz sound flash trigger, which allows you to take pictures like this...

As much as I love my new memory foam mattress, I can't help but want this BLADE RUNNER concept bed designed for Rick Deckard by Syd Mead:

It was described as the "Ultimate Party Bed": the various sections could all be rearranged to suit the party.

I like the look of those (I'm a Shark Attack 3 fan club member, after all), but surely the laws of physics dictate that they should end up floating on their sides? HOW DOES IT WORK?

they are very bottom heavy, so I guess the way icebergs go it's only a third sticking up, I'm not sure why they stay upright though, but then do.

A guitarist friend of mine has demoed a couple of this guy's guitars (I don't think it was any of the Star Wars ones), and apparently they sound awful and are terrible to play.

But then I guess he's not really making them for gigging or practising or anything.

To be fair, it's a piece of plastic attached to a cheap Encore guitar neck. It probably would sound dreadful.

And yet, I still want one.
