My belated thoughts about Superdan's mix (sorry this has taken so long, latop broke down so haven't been able to be on as much) I Wanna Destroy You - The Soft Boys Had probably heard this before, years ago because my brother loves Robyn Hitchcock, though this strikes me as an odd thing for him to like listening to it now, as he was a greasy hippie then. I liked it anyway, good poppy punky stuff. Son of a Gun - The Vaselines Hadn't heard them before - when it started up first time I thought it sounded quite Riot Grrly, and was thrown when male vocals came in, though I liked the alt male-female thing, was really cool. Destroy The Heart - The House of Love This was quite cool, really 80s indie, a band that I have seen stuff by in record shops over and over but never picked up for whatever reasons, but maybe next time, I'll get one. Leak at the Disco - Baxter Dury Untill quite recently, I was basically unaware Dury jr had been knocking out albums - but curiously I read a piece about him somwhere else, in an article about Rough Trade, and here. Here he sounds quite reminscent of his old man, but a bit more chilled out musically. Sounds really interesting though, its certainly one up from Julian Lennon. Back It Up - Caro Emerald I think if I'd have looked her up first, dutch jazz singer might have filled me with a bit of dread - there's someone rubbing their hands together at the thought of a new Winehouse clearly, but it was sleek and I did actually like it; its helped (like Amy at her best actually) by having a great big pop chorus.I may well check out some more of her. Empty Bottles - I Break Horses As you might have guessed from sticking Slowdive on yours, I do quite like a bit of shoegaze, but I'd never come across I Break Horses before. Really impressed though. Eye Know – De La Soul Can’t go too far wrong with De La Soul really. This is absolutely awesome. Kotchy – Bruce Fleetwood Didn’t know anything about this at all. Reminded me a bit of peak-era Primal Scream at the start, but it went somewhere different. Was cool. Cool Strut – Bernie Hayes Really funky stuff. Didn’t know anything about Bernie Hayes either (though google tells me he’s Australian, which I find oddly surprising). What Goes Up – Tyrone Power I really love the brass line in this. Don’t think I had heard it before, but really enjoyed it. You are the only person on Last.fm who has scrobbled this, by the way. Jungle Fever – Charlie Feathers This kinda chugged along in quite a foot tapping way, but its not the sort of thing I would ever have seeked out for myself I don’t think. Can’t Find My Way Home – Blind Faith I am not really a fan of Clapton. I like Strange Brew maybe, and can tolerate Badge cos of the GH connection. But you know Ginger Baker’s drumming is quite good. Born Under a Bad Sign – Richard Hawley Hawley is great, and this is one of his best. He’s always someone I should listen to more of, what with him being Sheffield’s Scott Walker (copyright Steve Lamacq) Sitting Still – R.E.M I really like early era REM. There was a show on BBC not that long ago with collections of their BBC performances across their history, and you can see in the 90s, that they keep coming back and seem to care less and less and less. This is great though. Rocks off – Rolling Stones I do like the Stones, though I don’t listen to them as much as their contemporaries (certainly, The Beatles, Beach Boys, Kinks etc) and in general I tend to stick to singles comps – I don’t rate many of their albums as highly as some do, and would include Exile… in that lot. Rocks Off doesn’t grab me in that primal way that their best stuff does, and it goes on a bit. Don’t let me down Gently – The Wonder Stuff The Wonder Stuff are another band, who I know I should listen to more than I do, I have some of their albums on Vinyl though, and my turntable is bust. As a result not heard this in a while but it bounces along as well as ever. The Day My Pad Went Mad – John Cooper Clarke I used to go out with a performance poet, and they were always divided on JCC obviously, to some (including her) he was a legend, and to others he was the famous(ish) one so you had to hate him. I love him though, and a story once told to me (probably apocryphal) about him – someone asked him what he was on when he did the Sugar Puffs advert and he said, straight as you like, “£200 an hour”. The Only Living Boy in New Cross – Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine Carter USM are the band I always see millions of albums by in the record shop but I have never picked up. They’re a really weird mix of influences that I can hear all over this, but I really liked it – the cool new order-y bass, the of-the-era keyboards, the post-punky vocals. I might pick something of theirs up next time, for sure. Rose Rouge – St Germain Weird mix of house drumbeat and jazzy stuff all over it, can close my eyes and actually be in a café somewhere (in France). I’m not really sure if this works or not, but I do kinda like it, so I guess it does.
