1. Fairport Convention - Fotheringay

My first FC track. Liked it quite bit.

2. Suede - The Drowners

I would be hard pressed to call myself a Suede fan, but I like a fair few of their singles and I like this one in particular.

3. Billie Holiday - Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man

Lovely.

4. Flying Burrito Brothers - Dark End of the Street

Cat Power did a cover of this. I like this song.

5. Fanfarlo - Fire Escape

A cool little indie pop song.

6. Antony and the Johnsons - I Fell in Love With a Dead Boy

Yeah, can't say I'm huge fan of ol' Tony and his Johnsons. This was an OK song, but his voice is a problem for me. Comes across as a bit of showboater, really.

7. Belle & Sebastian - I'm a Cuckoo

This is quite a jaunty and catchy song. For some reason I never made time to listen to B&S, but I want to hear more from them after listening to this.

8. Thea Gilmore - Take Me Home

Never heard of Thea Gilmore before, but I liked this quite a bit.

9. The Lemonheads - Big Gay Heart

Love The Lemonheads. This is a really excellent pick.

10. The Pogues - The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn

Shit, Shane MacGowan could actually sing at one point. Who da thunk it?

11. Kathleen Ferrier - What is Life?

Lovely.

12. Nina Simone - Give Me a Pigfoot and a Bottle of Bear

This was... OK. The weird production on Nina's voice was a problem for me.

13. Bob Dylan & The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (Live)

Liked this.

14. Frank Black - Speedy Marie

Frank Black is one of the most awesome human beings alive. This is a damn fine song.

15. Bonnie Prince Billy - I See a Darkness

My first BPB song, and it was a good one.

16. VV Brown - Shark in the Water

Never heard of VV Brown before listening to this, but what a cool song this was.

17. Tom Waits - I Wish I Was in New Orleans

Yeah, this was an OK song, but I'm not really a fan of Waits.

18. Tim Buckley - Phantasmagoria in Two

Cool song.

19. Morrissey - Everyday Is Like Sunday

I prefer Morrissey's work with The Smiths, but I like a handful of his solo work and I like this one in particular.

20. Sam Cook and the Soul Stirrers - Touch the Hem of His Garment

This a really fine song. How come don't I have more Sam Cook in my iTunes?

21. Phil Ochs - When I'm Gone (Live)

Never heard of this guy before, but this song was a good closer to the mix.

An enjoyable listen overall. Thanks, Rick.

Cool cool cool cool.

A few things.

That's Sandy Denny singing on the Fairport song. She is amazing and the three albums she did with them in 1969 are wonderful. After she left, they went a bit rubbish.
For Suede, The Power, Breakdown and Killing of a Flashboy were all considered, but I played it safe... might be worth a listen if you can be bothered.
The Burritos song was written by James Carr, the soul chap, but this is my favourite version of it (the bit where it comes in again with "If you take a walk down town..." might be my favourite 10 seconds of anything ever.)
Antony and the Johnsons did a sweet version of Poe's poem The Lake which isn't as showy-offy.
Belle and Sebastian: the EPs collection, Push Barman to Open Old Wounds, is probably the best starting point, though it's a little lighter on upbeat stuff than the 2003 record.
Thea Gilmore - Avalanche is perhaps her best record. That or Rules for Jokers. She's great live too.
Yeah, Shane MacGowan used to be a great singer. The first three albums are still brilliant. Shame, really.
Glad you liked Lemonheads, Kathleen Ferrier, Frank Black, et al.
Saw VV Brown blowing Florence and Her Terrible Machine off the stage at the Albert Hall and got the record. It's very good. She's supposed to have a new one out this summer but she keeps launching fashion labels and things instead.
Agree about Morrissey. I think he lost it after Your Arsenal, but Viva Hate is immense.
Sam Cook(e) is great.
I really should get ready for work now.

I found out from Joey Barton on Twitter, which I think says something about modern Britain. Not sure what. Also, I think I might have nicked that observation from someone else, which says something about me. She is super.

OK this has all gone well so far, shouldn't be too long before the next... oh, we have to wait for Fritzlfan to send Qwerty his Ryan Adams comp- I mean, Mixclub list. See you back here this time next year?

Edit: rick - The Greatest was the first Cat Power record I got, I think it's a great introduction to her stuff.

I quite like doing CD's, but Spotify is miles easier (and obviously cheaper) for people outside of the UK.

I'm still offended at wireless telephones. They removed the time honoured tradition of talking to people whilst sat on the stairs.

I prefer CD's purely for the fact that I can listen to them through my stereo, rather than tinny PC speakers.

I have worked out how to put the CD on my iPod as a playlist as well (go me!), but I think with Mix-Club it's nice having the CD, as you can pop it on in the kitchen without being massively anti-social (Spotify is also pretty impracticable if you don't have a smartphone), it makes it more of an event, and you'll stumble across it in your record collection five years later, which is cool.

I'd put the playlist on my phone and listen to it whilst in the car, its pretty much the only way I listen to music these days. And its much easier to bang some tracks in a playlist and email the link. It would also be hard for me to compile a CD with all the music I want to without purchasing the tracks as I pretty much stream/offline sync all my music through spotify premium.

Yeah, The Greatest, and then go with Jukebox and then The Cover Record. You Are Free, Moon Pix and What Would the Community Think are really tight albums, but they're very different from her last two, kinda bluesy albums. There's a particular song on You Are Free that never fails to make me well up like a little girl with grazed knee.

As for Regina, I started with Soviet Kitsch, so go with that. Begin to Hope is also good. Far is pretty decent, also.

My sister was a few years older than me, so she was in her teens when I was 7. Every time she'd try and talk to her boyfriend I'd find a reason to go and play on the stairs.

I'd do this next round, but I'd get paired with Fritzl and we like all the same things anyway.

I've now racked up 12 plays on Belle & Sebastian's I'm A Cuckoo. It's an insanely catchy and perfect little indie pop song.

I'm going to be buying the fuck out of their back catalogue once I get some disposable income coming in.
