Brave has been announced as the closing night film. Which I take as a great sign that they're heading back in the right direction this year. The screening's at the Festival Theatre though which I don't. It's an awful venue for films.  Still looking forward now to what else is in store

From the American writers, directors, studio, creative team, money etc etc. Wouldn't you be risking seeing the film with our power-hungry muppet Wee Eck?

I'm really tempted to head up this year. Was planning on doing so last year, until the negative vibe hit full swing.

Are there any films in particular you'd be hoping they get a hold of?

Tickets are on sale 31 May according to the EIFF Facebook page - not sure if this is the date for all the films or just Brave but I would imagine it's the former. I feel a day off work coming up.

If they sorted out the seats I could probably deal with the horrid air conditioning - but having that doublewhammy indeed makes it a pretty looking but immensely uncomfortable venue to watch a film.

Whilst Brave won't be the kind of thing I'll be checking out this year at the EIFF (seems a tad pointless given it gets an official release only a few weeks after), it's a good draw & the kind of thing they need in order to give the festival a proper balance between culture & commerce - something that was handled disastrously last year.

I just hope they bring back the world of cine & bin teviot's lecture theatres as well.

Oh yeah, and no guest curators who don't bother to show up either please...

Not as such, although I'm sure there will be a bit of a list post-Cannes. Miguel Gomes's Tabu is the big festival film thats currently exciting me the most.

I used to enjoy old EIFF's retrospective strands, before they started fannying about. There were some lovely surprises so I'm looking forward to seeing what they go for this year.

As I understand it, the festival will be back to normal. I certainly know that good films are being actively sought from recent festivals, also that the retrospective element will return, as will the competition, in a slightly broader format. Good times.

That is good to hear. Any idea if they're getting Cineworld back as a venue? I'm not at all keen on the FT and the least said about that bloody lecture theatre they used last year the better

Not entirely sure yet, but I bloody hope so.

The ludicrious & pompus argument along the lines of "cineworld has no soul" seemed to be the motivation to switch virtually everything that wasn't at the Cameo or the Fimhouse to teviot - and we all know how well that worked.

And I just hope they see further sense & bring back the '4 for 20' deal or introduce something similar - as I'm in no doubt that dropping it last year had a massive knock-on effect on ticket sales.

Glasgow has a saver deal which means you can get 20 tickets for half the price of normal - a saving of over £90. It seemed very popular (as did the smaller deals).

Yeah Glasgow year upon year seem to get things right & there's no doubt that its stock is rising. It'll easily overtake Edinburgh if those in charge here keep fudging things up.

Opening night film has been announced. Friedkin's latest Killer Joe

http://www.edfilmfest.org.uk/news/2012/04/opening-night-film-announcement.  Annoyingly it has to be at the Bloody Festival Fucking Theatre though. Worst venue ever.

edit: sorry about banging about the FT. I'll not say any more

No please do, the festival theatre should be rightly condemned. For me it's inclusion as a venue sums up Edinburgh as a city, we like all this fancy prestigious nonsense, even if it's wholly impractical & doesn't serve its fundamental purpose properly.

As for Killer Joe, not exactly much of an exclusive, but still, a decent draw again & perhaps an encouraging sign that EIFF is on a road to recovery.

The big reveal will obviously come with the launch of the programme though.

Mid to late May yeah?

I agree but I don't wan to be one of those guys who juts bangs on about the same subject over and over. Tickets are on sale 31 May so I'd expect the programme to be out around the 28/29th.

Okay so having just had a quick browse of the progaramme things are deifinitely looking up. They've got Cineworld back as a venue, they've brought back ticket discounts and the surprise movie is also back.

Will have a better look later.

Yeah I had a quick browse through the online copy & whilst it's not perfect, it's infinitely better than what they came up with last year & it's encouraging that they've corrected a lot of the stupid ideas.

I'd prefer a 4 for 20 kind of discount, but at least they've included one this time. Good to have cineworld, the Michael Powell award & the mystery film back as well.

Really pleased to see Peter Strickland's new one make the programme. I loved his last film Katalin Varga so that's a must see for me.

Would have liked some more/better guest speakers, but I guess the money dictates the range somewhat.

Overall though, not bad. Will have a better look at it when I pick up a hard copy later today.

Is it just me, or are ticket prices for this festival just becoming stupid? £9 per film means I just can't afford to see as many films as I'd like, and the discount deals are rubbish compared to years gone by (ie the number of tickets required to get a slight discount used to be lower).

Still, nice to see the festival getting back on course.

So first film down - Killer Joe was as expected a sordid little treat. Very blackly funny and populated by some very unpleasant characters. There's really not one of them that's likeable. Even Juno Temple's character who is the most sympathetic of the bunch is still happy to go along with and profit from murder. Also as expected though the experience was somewhat diminished by being in the FT with its oddly angled screen and rubbish sound which made a lot of the dialogue hard to catch. I'll have to see it again when it comes out.

Still we're off to a good start plenty more to see between now and Brave next Saturday

Making my EIFF 2012 debut tonight with Berberian Sound Studio, which I'm really looking forward to. If it's anywhere near as good as Peter Strickland's first (Katalin Varga) I'll be very pleased.

Also took advantage of the best of the fest & booked 4 films in a row. Will be seeing Brave, Day Of The Flowers, The Imposter & Shadow Dancer back to back. Should be fun!

Will mean I'll have to settle for watching the Euro 2012 final recorded though, but after last night I'm really not too fussed about it.

The full 'best of the fest' line up can be seen below. Anyone who wants to catch Brave should probably move quickly.

I got 4 in a row tickets too, but not the same four. Now I just need to try and find the time to actually go to them - I thought getting the tickets would at least give me some excuses. I was really surprised to see Brave turn up though. And disappointed not to see Tabu.
