Alex Garland borrowed more than just the deserted city tone. His screenplay is essentially Day of the Triffids with 'rage' infected people instead of carnivorous plants. The characters are similar. The settings are very nearly identical in most cases. It opens in a hospital and both endings involve the military (or a military in the case of Triffids). I'm not sure how he got away with it. That said, if it were a Triffids adaptation, it'd certainly be in the running as one of the best.
