 It's pretty known that Vikings went to the American continent before Colombus and it still doesn't explain what 95% of the symbolism and whatever the hell happens at the end when the film chooses to become even more opaque for the sake of being opaque. Actually I'll go with Valhalla Rising being one of those films that completely baffled me.

I see that as the films benefit.
Just makes you want to come back and watch it again.

Generally I like films that baffle me,especially ones that are scripted well and acted well.
Its films like this that bring me back into rewatching them again.Films that are not so obvious on first screenings.

I agree, although I do like it when baffling films throw a bone at the end that helps explain what's going on, which makes the second watch a little easier. Off the top of my head, Jacob's Ladder and Mulholland Dr took this approach.

Sounds like I'm in for a confusing treat - I bought it just after christmas having never seen it before.

To be honest, seriosuly weirdy/confusing films aren't normally my cup of tea. Things like Inception and Memento spring to mind as well as my aforementioned Usual Suspects, but none of them are too heavy really. David Lynch's batshit crazy, mega confusing-sounding output certainly doesn't appeal.


Twisty turny films with thoughtful plots, such as your Memento's, Inception's and Usual Supsects have never really baffled me. I think they're the kind of films that make perfect sense within their own movie universe if you're paying attention. On first viewing my missus could not get on with Inception, she never understood that there were simultaneous dream worlds all occuring at the same time, for example. But to me it was plain as day and all fit together perfectly and makes perfect sense to me. I love films that require that degree of attention, the reward always seems greater.

The surrealist, batshit insane output of Lynch is a different kind of bafflement to me, it's one that just makes my head ache and my mind buzz, and I know I'll never reallly understand what some of the imagery is all about, even if the overall plot makes sense. They're an enjoyable ride, with a story and narrative (sort of) but with imagery and visuals that just blow my mind, despite not knowing what the fuck is happening. I may need to revisit Twin Peaks as, although I remember a strong streak of the bizzarre, it was nothing compared to the opening 40 minutes or so of Fire Walk With Me (which I did really enjoy actually....kind of) so I think a revisit is in order.

 Memento took some time for me to click into the story of what is going on.Inception on the other hand was,for me, not as intelligent as it was hyped up to be ie Mark Kermode,dont get me wrong I enjoyed Inception but 2001 Space Odyssey it is not,nor was it trying to be.
Found Inception easy to follow to be honest.

Those who just want to eat a hotdog and text, which is an unfortunately large amount of people. Kermode wasn't be patronising, he was saying that you can't let your mind wander even for a moment or you'll probably miss something important.

Magnolia for me but I was more baffled about the amount praise the film gets. I hated it.

Just in case people thought I was a muppet for not getting Inception or Memento, I did (I'm so vain, I know) What I meant was that they are kind of my limit. I agree that they are made in such a way that they make perfect sense if you pay enough attention.

David Lynch...is his stuff really that hard to follow? Is it the sort of thing that makes sense really if you pay attention or is it just willfully impenetrable?

Far too many people unfortunately. You only have to go to a popular choice at the multiplexes on a Wednesday/Friday/Saturday night to see the amount of mobile phones illuminating the screening.

I think what Kermode meant was for a film with that size of budget and on that scale, it demands far more from the viewer than say the average "leave your brain at the door" big-budgeted blockbuster - something I agree with 100% & to which sneering twats like Will Self failed to recognise.

The key with Lynch is to not try and figure it out. You'll have a much better time with a film like Inland Empire or Mulholland Drive if you just sit there and let it immerse you.

Mulholland Drive really lost me at one point, but then at the end somehow made sense.

I don't understand Inception being confusing, it isn't if you pay attention, if you don't then it obviously will be because like Kermode said, you need to listen.

Tinker Tailor confused the fuck out of me the first time at points, but I found that quite fascinating and it really asked for repeat viewings. After a second viewing the film was a lot more clear, and I enjoyed it more. I think it's a brilliant film.

The end of Lost In Translation, only because you desperately want to know what he says, but then after it's over  you realise it's better left unknown.

Moneyball because of the baseball stat talk and terminology. WHAT THE HELL! Good film though despite that.

Barton Fink, but in a good way.

A Serious Man also had me completely confused. From the context of the opening scene to the meaning of the final shot, I had no idea what it was about.

I watched it all when it was broadcast by the BBC back in the day and loved every minute, now I'm loving it all over again.

Yep, I think I went to see that about four times and on each occasion I heard several exasperated cries of 'eh?' emanating from the more fuck-witted members of the audience.
